People believe that by watching courses, analysing charts, they can multiply their capital invested and make regular and quick income. [2] Why this isn't possible? F&O is a zero sum game. In a zero sum game, you make profits only if someone else loses. When the big proprietary traders have thousands of crores of capital, they can outsmart all your charts. This was recently revealed in the Jane Street order by SEBI (read my last post to know more). Those individual traders friends who've been consistently making profits also say that it is becoming tough to make a decent ROI on F&O. [3] It's a get rich poorer scheme All seemingly get rich quick schemes are get rich poorer schemes. Retail traders lose more money than Nifty Smallcap 100 companies make taken together. Let this sink in: The companies ranking from 251 to 350 in valuation made ~₹68,000 crores in last 12 months while all retail traders lost ₹1,05,603 crores in FY25 - a staggering 55% more. =============== This is a systemic risk and I sincerely urge the government and the regulator to curb this menace. Recently, SEBI released the final framework for 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝 (𝐒𝐈𝐅), but what are SIFs?   A new category structured to bridge the gap between Mutual Funds (MFs) & Portfolio Management Services (PMS). Here’s how they compare: - 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: MFs typically start as low as ₹500, while PMS requires ₹50 lakh. SIFs sit in between with a ₹10 lakh minimum. - 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: MFs offer standardized portfolios, while PMS is fully customized. SIFs allow more flexibility than MFs but within defined strategies. 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: MFs are tightly regulated, while PMS operates with fewer restrictions. SIFs offer a balance—more flexibility than MFs but with SEBI’s oversight. 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬: MFs have limited derivative exposure, PMS has no restrictions, and SIFs allow some level of short selling   𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐈𝐅𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 SEBI has approved three main investment strategies 1️⃣ 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲-𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬  - Equity Long-Short Fund: 80% equity, 25% max shorting i. e fund can have a maximum of 25% of its total assets in unhedged short positions - Sector Rotation Fund: Focuses on max 4 sectors - Ex-Top 100 Long-Short Fund: Avoids large caps, while maintaining 65% equity exposure 2️⃣ 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐭-𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬  - Debt Long-Short Fund: Duration-based flexibility - Sectoral Debt Fund: will focus on 2 or more sectors + up to 75% allocation per sector 3️⃣ 𝐇𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬  - Active Asset Allocator Fund: Invests across equity, debt, REITs & commodities - Hybrid Long-Short Fund: At least 25% in both equity & debt Each SIF can offer only one strategy per category—ensuring clarity in fund objectives.   𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬: - Minimum investment: ₹10 lakh per investor (except for accredited investors) - If investment falls below ₹10 lakh due to redemption, the entire holding must be redeemed - Systematic Investment Plans (SIP), Systematic Withdrawal Plans (SWP), and Systematic Transfer Plans (STP) are allowed but must meet the ₹10 lakh threshold - Flexible redemption frequencies: Daily, weekly, monthly, or fixed-maturity - Notice period for redemption: Up to 15 working days - Closed-ended SIFs must be listed on a stock exchange for liquidity - Risk band system (like mutual fund riskometer) for transparency

Overall, it’s a great app for anyone who wants to track their mutual funds without spending hours.

RBI’s ₹10 Lakh Crore Push Isn’t Sparking Loan Growth, Here’s Why The Reserve Bank of India has injected record liquidity into the system, over ₹10 lakh crore since late 2024,and cut repo rates by 100 bps. Yet, credit growth is slowing sharply: Non-food credit growth: 9.8% YoY in May 2025 (vs 16.2% a year ago). Industrial loans: 4.9% YoY (down from 8.9%). Deposit growth: ~10%, now outpacing credit growth, pushing the credit-deposit ratio down to ~78%. Surplus liquidity parked: Banks are parking ~₹2 trillion daily in RBI’s Standing Deposit Facility instead of lending. What’s happening? Liquidity isn’t the issue, demand is. Corporates remain cautious, capex appetite is weak, and consumption demand has slowed. Lending rates have fallen ~25 bps, but policy transmission is slow, and sticky deposit rates are limiting further cuts. What experts say: Nomura and JP Morgan expect loan growth to moderate to 7–8% by March 2026. Structural reforms, easier FDI, trade/tariff simplification, and measures to revive investment sentiment may be the only way to unlock real credit demand. Bottom line: India’s banking system is flush with cash, but money isn’t moving. More liquidity won’t help, reviving confidence to borrow and invest will. India has 19.4 Cr demat accounts. But only one betting app has 20 Cr users. Gaming is not just a zero-sum game but heavy taxation kills almost all your probability of winning. All about its taxation👇 [1] Income tax on online gaming Winnings from online gaming are taxed at a flat 30%. There’s no minimum amount. Even ₹1 is taxed. Net winnings during the year are taxed. [2] Calculation of tax on online gaming Section 194BA mandates TDS at 30% on net winnings. This means that you’ll receive the net winnings after tax. Tax is calculated on actual profit. Net winnings = Withdrawal - (Deposits + Opening balance) [3] Example: You paid an entry fee of ₹500 and won ₹20,000. TDS @30% will be deducted from your winnings (₹19,500). This 30% (₹5,850) will be deposited to Govt. You will receive ₹14,150. [4] Are deductions allowed? You won’t be able to deduct the expenses of internet, gadgets or anything that you have used for the purpose of gaming online. Flat 30% tax will apply regardless. [5] Set-off of online gaming losses You won't be able to set off the losses of lost games against the winning games. The net amount of winnings during the financial year will be taxed in full at 30%. [6] GST on online gaming Since Oct’23, a uniform 28% GST is levied on the total money deposited with online gaming operators, irrespective of whether they are skill-based or chance-based. Before this, skill-based games attracted 18%, while chance-based games had a 28% GST rate. Gaming platforms were considering this rate earlier on their platform fee and not the deposits. For every ₹100 invested, now you have only ₹66 worth of amount that you can bet after GST. Betting is already a zero-sum game (someone's loss is someone else's win. Majority can't win). Now you have far fewer chances of making any money. [7] GST on overseas gaming platforms From October 1, 2023, overseas online gaming companies targeting Indian players are required to register under the Simplified Registration Scheme as per the Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) Act. Non-compliant platforms may be blocked. [8] What’s your role? You don’t have to manage tax compliance. The platform deducts TDS before crediting winnings to your bank account. But remember, you must provide your correct PAN to the platform and it’s still reportable in your ITR. [9] Which ITR to file? If you have income from online gaming, you’ll have to file either ITR-2 or ITR-3. Winnings are treated as “Income from Other Sources. =========== Like the content? If I were an NRI, I wouldn’t just open a demat account to invest in India. Because that’s how most portfolios get stuck. They open the account and stop there. India recently crossed 20 crore demat accounts yet NRI holdings under custody are ₹17,275 crore. That’s less than 2% of the ₹14 lakh crore sitting in NRI bank deposits. Clearly, opening a demat account is just Step 1. Last year, an NRI client told me  "I’ve finally opened my demat account. Now I can invest back home." Six months later, he came back disappointed. His money was parked, but his goals weren’t any closer. The problem was that he had a locker, but no plan. Here's the hard truth: A demat account is just the storage for your investments. It won’t tell you: - What to buy - How much to allocate - When to adjust Why you need more than a demat account: 1. No clear goal mapping  → Without a plan for retirement, property, or children’s education, your portfolio is directionless. 2. Tax efficiency gaps  → You need strategies for both India and your country of residence. 3. Currency risk  → INR fluctuations can quietly eat into your returns. 4. Compliance headaches  → Cross-border reporting errors can be costly. 5. No ongoing review  → Markets change. Your investments should too. A demat account is like an empty cupboard. You still need the right clothes (assets), in the right fit (allocation), for the right occasion (goal). Sharpe Ratio, Treynor's Ratio & Beta with examples : 1. Sharpe Ratio:   - Meaning: Think of the Sharpe ratio like comparing two jobs: one pays well with some risk (Investment A), and the other pays less but is safer (risk-free asset like a savings account).   - Example: Suppose Investment A earns ₹10,000 with a 10% chance of losing ₹5,000. A safer job might pay ₹6,000 without any risk. The Sharpe ratio helps decide if the higher-paying job (Investment A) is worth the risk, considering how much more it pays compared to the safer job.  - Example: If Investment A gives a return of 10% and a risk-free asset gives 5%, with a standard deviation (risk measure) of 8%, the Sharpe ratio would be (10% - 5%) / 8% = 0.625. A higher Sharpe ratio indicates better risk-adjusted performance. - The Sharpe ratio measures the risk-adjusted return of an investment compared to a risk-free asset, like government bonds. 2. Beta:   - Meaning: Beta measures how much a stock moves compared to the overall stock market.   - Example: Imagine a basketball player (the stock) who usually scores 20 points when the team scores 100 points (the market). If the player's average score is 25 points when the team scores 100 points, their beta is 1.25.
