In my interactions over the last few days at the India AI Impact Summit, it seems like there is a great potential in integrating generative AI (RAG, agents, contextual recommendations, multi-modal / multi-lingual models etc) with ECHO's community-based learning model to further bridge the knowledge divide - however we must work to empower front line workers instead of replacing them, while making communities more resilient towards future pandemics and other crises. Impact Ignited- AI Powered Ideas in Action at InvokED 5.0 brought together insightful ideas from a diverse group, where I shared how Project ECHO is developing foundational technology to build and grow trusted human networks — amplifying the human impact of the 100 million+ front line workers globally A.I. is not a silver bullet that will magically solve challenges of inequity — it however can play a big role in democratizing access and empowering FLWs and eliminate barriers of region, language, and tech-literacy. This is the core of what our work at Project ECHO is all about.

In the months since, the pace of change has been remarkable. Platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Dremio, RisingWave, ClickHouse, Cloudera, Lakekeeper, Trino Software Foundation, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have delivered significant new integrations, and Apache Iceberg itself has reached version 1.10.0, introducing capabilities that reshape how practitioners interact with the format. To reflect this momentum, we are undertaking a ground-up rewrite. Our priorities include: ✅ Iceberg 1.10.0 alignment and deprecation cleanup – removing outdated recipes that no longer reflect best practices while upgrading all demos, examples, and exercises to incorporate the changes introduced in Iceberg 1.10.0. For example, Snowflake’s support for catalog-linked databases to external catalogs makes earlier object integration recipes obsolete. ✅ Ecosystem validation – testing and refining recipes across Databricks, Snowflake, Dremio, and AWS to ensure seamless interoperability with Iceberg 1.10.0. We expect this rewrite to take two to three months. Below is a link to my latest piece in Hindustan Times on the silver lining behind the dark clouds gathering over the IT industry. As AI begins to automate the maintenance work that defined the outsourcing era, some of the best engineers are realizing they no longer have to spend their careers as coolies keeping other people’s systems alive or putting up with the shit around H-1B visas in the United States. They can finally do what they studied engineering to do: build solutions to real problems. I have seen this shift firsthand at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras . Under the leadership of director V. Kamakoti, and with Professors Dr. Mohanasankar Sivaprakasam and Jayaraj Joseph, their team of engineers is developing plasma physics and spectroscopy hardware for Vionix Biosciences that a startup could not dream of building in the West today, largely because the dearth of hardcore engineering talent. In my article, I explain how for decades, India trained mechanical, civil, electrical, and biotech engineers only to them drift into generic IT roles because that was where the jobs and salaries were. AI is closing that door, and as routine coding and maintenance become automated, engineers are returning to their disciplines, using AI as a multiplier for physics, biology, and systems design. I also contrast India’s AI path with Silicon Valley, where AI development is increasingly driven by fundraising cycles, model size, and valuation metrics, and China, where AI is deeply integrated into surveillance systems and state control.
