“Bhaiya, I’ve been studying for months… still no offer.” “Mera DSA strong hai, phir bhi shortlisting nahi aa rahi.” I’ve heard this from too many freshers lately. And I get it. This phase hurts. But here’s the truth no one tells you: 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱. 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 - 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴. That’s the mindset every tech fresher needs during placement season. Because in the end, consistency beats luck. If you're still in college and want to crack a tech placement, here's the roadmap no one gave us: → Start with one language. C++, Java, or Python. Don’t try to learn everything. → DSA isn’t optional. Give it 60-90 minutes daily for at least 6 months. → Build 2-3 real projects. Not tutorials. Build things you actually understand. → Open a GitHub profile. Clean, readable, and active. → Learn basic CS concepts. OOPs, DBMS, OS, Networking - questions always come from here. → Mock interviews matter. Practice speaking your thoughts out loud. → Apply even if you're scared. No one feels “ready.” Apply anyway. And most importantly: → Don’t compare your timeline with others. Some people crack it in the first month. Some take 6-12 months. The one who keeps going always gets there. Mention why them, and what value you bring. ✅ Step 3: Show proof Link to your project, GitHub, resume, or anything that backs your words. ✅ Step 4: Ask for a micro-conversion Not “please hire me.” Ask for: – A short call – A referral – Feedback on your project – A freelance trial task ✅ Step 5: Follow up (respectfully) No reply? A frontend engineer applied to Blinkit for an SDE-1 role. They knew DSA, understood core CS fundamentals, and had good industry experience, but still got rejected in the machine coding round. Another frontend engineer went for SDE-1 at Swiggy. Despite a solid grasp on algorithms, they got tripped up by a high-level design (HLD) question and got rejected. Stories like these are everywhere now. Companies are moving past pure DSA and want engineers who can build real features, design systems, and write scale code. Swiggy, Zomato, Nykaa, Upstox, RazorPay, Navi, and Cars24 all run machine coding rounds in their interviews for frontend roles. ► So, what exactly is the machine coding round? This round tests how you take a real-world product requirement and turn it into a working application or feature, under time pressure, with messy constraints, and with the expectation that your code could go live. You might be asked to build a mini-dashboard, interactive table, chat UI, or even an end-to-end feature, using your tech stack of choice. ► What do you have to do? Write production-ready, modular, and readable code Show you can handle edge cases, loading, and errors. Think about performance, scalability, and user experience. Make smart design choices for components, state, and data flow. Explain your approach as you build, and adapt on the fly to feedback. ► Best practices for cracking this round: Clarify requirements at the start; don’t assume anything. Sketch a component and data structure plan before jumping into code. Structure files and logic for easy reading and extension. Build in increments, test and show your progress at milestones. Practice with real problems from actual interview experiences, not just sample projects. Most importantly, remember that companies want to see how you think, not just what you know. Your process, clarity, and ability to adapt under pressure matter as much as the final output.
