The IPO saw strong investor interest and was ~82x oversubscribed. Meesho's shares listed at INR 162.5 (46% above IPO price) on the first day of trading. Founded in 2015 by IIT Delhi alumni Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal, Meesho has evolved from its unique social commerce origins into a robust full-stack e-commerce platform. It connects over 230mm consumers (including first-time online shoppers in Tier 2/3/4 cities (~88% users from outside top 8 cities)), 700k+ sellers, 120k+ logistics partners/ delivery agents, and 50k+ content creators in an integrated, AI-powered ecosystem that offers everyday low prices and a diverse product assortment, including unbranded and regional brands not easily accessible on other platforms. Across these interviews, Vidit Aatrey consistently frames a very deliberate set of choices around the model: • A pure marketplace, zero-commission core that goes all-in on value-conscious Bharat, while shifting monetisation to fulfilment and to structurally better profit pools in high-ROI seller ads. • A logistics and fulfilment stack that is optimised to expand the addressable market and improve economics for the ecosystem, even if the real margin pool sits elsewhere. • Ads and, over time, lending as data-led layers on top of a dense transaction graph, with significant headroom in both penetration and product sophistication. What is equally striking is how Meesho has carved out this position in the shadow of much larger, better-capitalised players by choosing a very different battle: building for value-conscious Bharat, expanding the market with truly new-to-ecommerce customers, and turning that segment into its own defensible niche in “value commerce”. Meesho’s business model is a useful reminder that durable internet platforms are built on clear, consistent answers to “who do we serve, how do we win for them, and where do profits really come from”, and Meesho has been remarkably steady on all three. A compelling example: 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹, 𝗶𝘅𝗶𝗴𝗼, recently shared detailed insights on how they are approaching 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗜—AI that isn’t just reactive, but proactively takes decisions and acts. Recently, we attended the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗜𝗕𝗜𝗟 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, where an insightful discussion was held around the newly released 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 (𝘈𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘭 2025). The findings reaffirmed our conviction in the strong and evolving opportunity within the FinTech ecosystem. FinTechs are also playing a pivotal role in expanding financial inclusion. As of December 2024, 𝟴% 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮'𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 (𝟮𝟯.𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀) are already engaging with FinTech platforms — with a growing base of younger, semi-urban, and rural consumers being served through innovative, digital-first models. FinTechs today manage an outstanding loan book of ₹𝟭.𝟯 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝟯𝟮% 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗼𝗻-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿. They have cemented their leadership in small-ticket personal loans (STPLs), accounting for 𝟴𝟵% 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Even more excitingly, FinTechs are now actively diversifying beyond unsecured personal loans — with rising contributions in business loans and loan against property (LAP), signaling a strategic expansion into broader financial services. One of the most exciting insights was around opportunities for product diversification. Data shows that nearly 𝟰𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 go on to take products like 𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗔𝗣 within a year. This creates a massive opportunity for FinTechs to either design new lending products that better meet evolving consumer needs or collaborate via co-lending partnerships to offer more competitive interest rates. As FinTechs build deeper customer relationships, serving multiple credit needs could be a real game-changer. The kind of event where you walk in with a point of view and walk out questioning half of it- in the best possible way. What hit different was the honesty in the room. No one pretending they have the AI playbook figured out. Founders openly talking about what broke, what surprised them, and what they’re genuinely scared of. That vulnerability is rare at industry events and it’s entirely a function of the community Avinash Raghava, Keerthi Madhu, Neha Arya and the AIBoomi (formerly SaaSBoomi) family have built over the years. The conversations that are still rattling around in my head: 1. India is no longer just an application-layer story. We’re starting to build the actual intelligence, not just wrap it. That shift feels significant. 2. Speed has been democratized completely. A team in Surat is competing with a team in San Francisco. Geography is done as an excuse. Distribution and judgment are the only edges left. 3. And the big one- most AI companies are winning pilots and losing the production battle. That gap between “great demo” and “mission critical system” is where the real work is. Oh and pricing. Everyone is winging it. The founders who stop winging it first will win. And to all the volunteers who made all of this happen- cheers to more conversations, more honest rooms, and more of this. AI is emerging as one such pivotal moment. We’re excited to see our portfolio company ixigo deepen its partnership with OpenAI to embed advanced AI capabilities across its ecosystem, including ixigo, ConfirmTkt, and AbhiBus, and now Spain’s Trenes, the country’s second-largest OTA, which ixigo recently acquired as part of its foray into European markets. This goes far beyond customer-facing automation. In 2025, ixigo launched its three-pronged AI roadmap- Project Trishul- anchored on: • Efficiency – driving structural cost leverage through automation. • Revenue – improving monetisation across demand and supply surfaces. • Disruption – building multi-modal, agentic systems capable of handling complex workflows end-to-end. What stands out is not the ambition, but the execution at scale. Today, AI handles nearly 90% of ixigo’s voice and chat-based customer interactions end-to-end, reflecting how deeply AI is embedded in its core operating processes. It has been an incredibly fulfilling journey and one that leaves me with immense gratitude for the learnings, friendships, and experiences of a lifetime. When I joined Elevation in 2011, the Indian startup ecosystem was just finding its rhythm, and I’ve been fortunate to witness it grow into one of the most vibrant and fastest-growing in the world. I have had the unparalleled opportunity to work across spaces as diverse as consumer tech, gaming, healthcare, AI, deep tech and advanced manufacturing. You all have been my greatest teachers, and thank you for placing your trust in me. I’m equally thankful to have worked alongside such gifted partners and colleagues.
