  • 📢 Carla Aldington becomes Royal Society of Chemistry trustee Carla Aldington, a Beauty & Wellbeing Consumer Technical Insights and Market R&D Assistant Manager at Unilever has been appointed as a trustee of the Royal Society of Chemistry. As a graduate of our Broadening Horizons programme, Carla already has experience of our governing board, having taken the opportunity to take part as an early career observer in 2024 and 2025. Carla said: “I am deeply honoured to have been appointed as a Trustee of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Having been a member of the RSC since undertaking my undergraduate studies, and having engaged with the charity through conferences, mentorship schemes, workshops, and as part of cohort one of the Broadening Horizons programme, this appointment feels immensely meaningful. If the Carla who walked into Burlington House for the first time at the Broadening Horizons taster event had known that she would one day become a trustee, she would have been extraordinarily proud." Great to see the publication of the FutuRaM project’s final report, offering fascinating insights into the scale of Europe’s “urban mine” and the role waste could play in the future supply of critical minerals. The analysis covers seven major waste streams, including electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, vehicles and dismantled wind turbines, across the EU27 plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and the UK. The full report can be found here: https://futuram.eu/ Some headline findings highlight the scale of opportunity in our waste: ♻️ Improved recovery systems could enable Europe to recover 4.1–5.7 million tonnes of critical raw materials annually by 2050, with the potential to substitute up to 56% of primary material imports under a circular economy scenario ♻️ In 2022, 5.2 million tonnes of critical materials were placed on the market, compared to 2.1 million tonnes entering waste streams and just 1.4 million tonnes recovered ♻️ Around 17 critical materials, including lithium, cobalt and rare earths, could reach recovery rates above 80% by 2050, despite very low recycling rates today for some of them. Beyond supply security, recovering these materials also delivers significant environmental benefits when avoided emissions are considered. However, the report also makes clear there are major gaps in current collection and recycling systems which mean the full potential may not be realised. Its recommendations closely align with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s, particularly the need to improve data collection and tracking of material flows, and to invest in recycling infrastructure and technologies to prevent valuable resources being lost from the economy. This year, I discovered solo hiking. In those moments alone, surrounded by nothing but an endless expanse of nature, I’ve come to understand the true meaning of “breathtaking”. Time and again, I find myself struck by the intense beauty of our world and by the sense of possibility that comes from standing at the edge of the unknown. It’s a place we’re finding ourselves more and more...and especially at work where the future is being fundamentally re-shaped by technology and AI. For those interested in scholarly communications and how we’re preparing for the future of our journals business at the Royal Society of Chemistry, I’m sharing our latest article where I reflect on navigating a period of unprecedented change within scholarly publishing along with colleagues Emma Wilson, Director of Publishing and Richard Kidd, Head of Chemistry Data. https://lnkd.in/eUdPW7Rw #STMPublishing #AI #Future #Technology #OpenAccess #ChemicalScience

  • It was great to connect with our members, partners and the wider chemical sciences community at CHEMUKEXPO last week. Across the event, we hosted talks, had valuable conversations and brought members together through our networking reception, with a strong sense of collaboration throughout. Highlights included our Change Makers session, discussions on the skills needed to build a sustainable workforce, and a keynote speech from our CEO, Helen Pain MBE CSci CChem FRSC, showcasing the RSC’s work and impact across the chemical sciences. On our stand, our “What does a chemist look like?” activity encouraged thoughtful discussion about the diversity of people working in chemistry today, while our colleagues gave careers consultations to chemical scientists at a range of stages in their careers. Supporting our industry members is central to what we do. Events like CHEMUK give us the opportunity to listen, connect and demonstrate how we support people and organisations through membership, professional development and accreditation. Thank you to everyone who took part and shared their expertise and perspectives. Watch the video below to hear a fantastic range of what our members, partners and attendees had to say about the event and our involvement. #CHEMUK2026 #ManyFacesOfChemistry
