Central Valley, California natives Grandaddy were indie darlings primed for greatness through records like Complex Party Come Along Theories (1994), Under the Western Freeway (1997), and The Sophtware Slump (2000).
The band – led by Jason Lytle in all their indie meets space rock meets psych rock meets lo-fi – were great. They scored an opening slot with Elliott Smith on his Figure 8 tour in 2000, and recorded a memorable cover of The Beatles’ Revolution in 2001 for the I Am Sam soundtrack.

I’ve been a fan of Grandaddy since a friend played me an MP3 of “The Crystal Lake,” I also remember taking my bike to the Tower Records on Route 17 and picking up Sumday the week it dropped, good times. The new Grandaddy album Blu Wav (out February 16, which is next week) is excellent and a change of pace for longtime fans, but Jason Lytle’s still delivering that bittersweet perspective that has made his music so winning for years now. I got to hop on a call with Jason back in December to get into all of it.

When Jason Lytle of Grandaddy turns on his Zoom camera, he’s predictably perched outside, a cloudless blue California sky behind him, a palm tree in the distance. I off-handedly comment that it’s very bright. “I can darken things down,” Lytle jokes. “Get in a dark room under the covers and go full goth.”

Jason Lytle, also known as the indie songwriter Grandaddy, is a beloved California-born indie songwriter and performer. Most recently, Lytle announced his forthcoming new album, Blu Wav, which is set to release on February 16, 2024.
