Τoday, I had the pleasure of participating in Bloomberg’s panel discussion “Greek Energy: The New Era”, where I elaborated on how rapidly the #energy landscape in our region is evolving and why the next decade will be decisive.
⚡At #PPC Group, we have been investing heavily in clean technologies for the last 7 years, not only in Greece but across Southeast Europe, while also leading one of the fastest coal phase-out plans.
The #transformation of Greece’s power system is already visible: shifting from a dependent importer to a net exporter, the country is leveraging its decarbonized #power mix to drive regional competitiveness.
Geopolitical volatility has clarified our mandate: #Europe must substitute imported insecurity with domestic #resilience. The solution lies in the strategic integration of high #RES penetration, modernized grids, and utility-scale flexibility. This is no longer just a climate #goal; it is an economic prerequisite. By transitioning to a system powered by domestic renewables, we achieve a dual victory: we decouple our economies from the volatility of global supply shocks, while simultaneously lowering the cost of energy. #Decarbonization is the only roadmap that delivers both energy #security and a competitiveness for Europe’s future.
At the same time, we are entering a phase where energy and #technology are becoming a single, integrated ecosystem . The rise of #AI and digital infrastructure creates a new layer of #electricity demand. Data centers alone are expected to add 30 more gigawatts of demand across Europe in the coming years.
This is why utilities must also play a role in enabling the industrial ecosystem of the #digital economy. At #PPC Group, we are moving forward with the development of large-scale data center infrastructure in Greece, helping position the country as a strategic location for digital and AI-driven #investment.
Looking ahead, #flexibility will be critical. Gas will continue to play a role, while storage, #renewables and #smart #grids will form the backbone of the future system.
For investors and energy companies alike, the region offers one of the most dynamic opportunities in Europe today, driven by transformation, infrastructure development and the rapid evolution of the energy #system.
Thank you Francine Lacqua for having me, it was a truly fruitful dialogue.
Special thanks also to Constantin Cotzias and Katerina Dede for the great organisation and supervision of the event today!
