How to switch between personal github copilot subscription and business seat? #171377
-
Select Topic AreaQuestion Copilot Feature AreaGeneral BodyHey. As the title suggests, I'm having an issue with my copilot subscription and it's integration in vscode. I first received a "Your Copilot subscription has expired" notification in vscode. When I logged on to github, I saw that I was assigned a business seat in my company's copilot license (we just activated it), which isn't an issue. The issue is that I no longer see my previous personal copilot subscription, and I can't seem to access it on vscode, or switch between the business subscription and my personal subscription. Is there a way to do this at the moment? Thanks in advance for any assistance. |

Hi @thorrester , Right now, Copilot doesn’t support switching between multiple subscriptions (for example, a personal Copilot Pro plan and a Copilot Business seat) in the same editor. When your organization assigns you a seat, that subscription takes priority, and your personal subscription isn’t shown in VS Code. If you’d prefer to keep using your personal subscription, you’d need to either:

@Akash1134 Is there any plan to update this? Separate accounts creates a big headache, not to mention the splitting of metrics and connections. |

Its kinda crazy that this hasn't been changed in 2026... I can't use Co-Pilot for personal projects using the business account... Why would you even have this work in this way?!? |

Is there a way i can get a refund for my personal license then? That is a huge waste of reasources, if this is the case |

I've been using copilot heavily at work and thought about doing a side project with it this evening... only to find that I can't because apparently I can't have a separate subscription for at home use vs at work use? Could someone at github kindly write up a feature request for separate subscriptions and then... just have copilot implement it for you? |

I am still baffled why there is no way to have multiple subscriptions. I have to essentially create a new Github account if I want to have separation. I would have appreciated it if they made it very clear because their documentation recommends |

Well, I was going to make a new subscription for personal use in my account which already have a business subscription. Since there is no way, I'll get codex instead. Good job github! |

It would be nice to at least have possibility to sum up tokens first and buy additional one, cuz f.ex. I've wasted all tokens assigned by organization and I also would want to use it for my personal use and right now I cannot use any of those tokens. I also (as a teacher) have some Copilot Educational tokens, which I also cannot use cuz organizational license takes priority, like what the heck? This make Copilot unusable for me even If I would want to, also doing separate account for me would be nightmare cuz I would need to create access for all repos to second account, which is kinda tedious task... Ahhh why cannot you vibecode such a simple feature...? Like seriously Opus would smash that feature in a few minutes with right prompt... |

This is a major legal problem. I was using my personal Copilot usage for all my personal projects and never had a business seat. Then unbeknownst to me, my org admin had allocated me a business seat. I didn't notice for a long time until I expected to have started hitting limits then I saw that it has automatically switched me over to this business seat without my approval. Now my employer has a fair claim to all that Intellectual Property that I developed in my own time because I was technically using company resources even though I did not consent to it or do that myself. |
