Hello GitHub Support Team, Until yesterday, I could select models in GitHub Copilot Chat via the "Pick Model" dropdown in VS Code Insiders. However, as of this morning, the dropdown has disappeared, and I can no longer choose any model. My environment details:
I have tried:
Could you please check if there is an issue with my account or if the model picker has been temporarily disabled? Thank you. |

Hey! Yeah, looks like GitHub recently removed the model picker from Copilot Chat in the latest VS Code Insiders update. I had it too until yesterday, but now it’s gone for me as well. You’ve already tried all the usual steps, so it’s probably not just you. Might be a temporary change or a backend update. I’d suggest keeping an eye on the changelog or switching to the stable VS Code version if it’s blocking your workflow. |

The current problem of not finding the model still exists, should this be solved like this? |

Switching Copilot extension to release version fixed the issue for me in the mean time. |

In #148436 I told how to fix it, because the release version didn't work for me |

I lost the feature now too. And Copilot now just keeps showing the loading indication whenever I ask it a question. It's not answering anything. Copilot Version: 1.350.0 (Copilot plan: Student pack) |

Hello, I've had exactly the same thing since yesterday (August 25, 2025). I'm using VS Code "normal," version 1.103. I tried installing an older version of Copilot / Copilot-chat as described above, but it doesn't work. Do I have to wait for a newer version? Thank you very much! |

Answer: ✅ What usually fixes it:
💡 If you’ve already tried downgrading: don’t. The issue is on the extension side, not your plan. GitHub usually pushes a patch pretty quick after these VS Code version bumps. So for now → stay on the latest Copilot/Copilot Chat, and if it still doesn’t work, it’s just a matter of waiting for the next patch drop. |

I'm now getting this issue with none of the above working. This was after the upgrade that was pushed this morning. |

Same issue for me. It just says "working" and that's all This goes beyond the "new feature" or "insider feature" as Copilot is just broken now

I'm having the same issue. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the extensions, they're set to auto-update so it can't be that, heck, I even uninstalled and redownloaded VS Code as a whole! Nothing worked. |

Have an update on my side - was the org blocked 'generative AI' - I think copilot's basically made it clear what it is doing now rather than just DNS etc. which is probably why we're experiencing same issues. |

It is driving me nuts. Now I see that there are serious problems. It may be an authentication issue. Checking to the budget might be going wrong. A few days ago, I could choose my model next to the mode box, and then it just disappeared. Cannot change my model, and I see at the bottom of the chat a model name appearing, which is the former one I used, not the one I used before the choice disappeared. |

Thanks it works. It is strange to use a drop-down button as a menu opener with right click. This is my first time I see this in any UI! Is this according to active standards??
Was there a change? I cannot remember I did this command the other way around(deactivation)
It is even stranger as I see 2 identical Model Pickers when I right click with visible Model Picker!
Consider to rise a bug report for this. I am helped now. For me you can close my ticket

For me this worked:
1. Right click on the Ask/Agent button
2. Make sure you select the option Open Model Picker (notice the similarity to Open Mode Picker!!!)
Otherwise, you can launch the model picker with the keybinding you have saved under workbench.action.chat.openModelPicker (which is command+option+. for me on Mac)

I am having this problem in on my PoPOS laptop, I do not have the option on the right click. I did look up the workbench.action.chat.openModelPicker which told me Ctlr + . when only open the dialog asking me to pick agent/ask/plan .... |

Looks like this issue happens whenever VS Code updates before the Copilot extensions catch up. What fixed it for me: Update both GitHub Copilot + Copilot Chat to the latest version (≥ 1.350.0). If the picker is still missing, switch Copilot to the Release version from the Extensions panel. Restart VS Code completely. You can also open the picker manually via the command: workbench.action.chat.openModelPicker. |

Whenever I get issues like this related to GitHub Copilot, changing any setting on the GitHub Copilot settings on the website seems to trigger a refresh and fix it on VS Code |

The “Pick Model” option disappearing is a common issue after a VS Code update. It usually happens when the GitHub Copilot extensions haven’t fully synced with the new VS Code version. Quick fixes that work for most people:
In most cases, once the extensions catch up with the VS Code update, the model picker comes back automatically. |

Does anyone have the same issue with me? I have the Pick Model option in the chat view, however, nothing happens after I clicked 'Pick Model' --Manage Models--Copilot. It still shows 'Pick Model' there. Really weird, as my network setting and copilot account are unchanged. BTW my VSCODE and Copilot extension both have been upgraded to the latest. I already tried reload windows, reinstall the extensions and reopen VSCODE. None worked!! |
