Just based upon experience of these modules.
Good PSU is everything (preferably alongside a low ESR cap)!

Using 2x Arduino Nanos (non-genuine) 2x NRF24+PA+LNA had same issue with lost packets, both better when touched, fixed by external 3.3v power source.

Using 2x identical PCB boards and Pico shows that a low ESR rated capacitor RX packets per second go from ~5 to ~100

Hope this helps people, these modules are great, when they work! :)

This often means the manufacturer skipped a capacitor on the antenna. Better shown in pictures (+ schematic) in this article

I appreciate this feedback, and I've been on the fence about adding this "better when touched" problem to the Common Issues doc. Thanx for your diligent testing and recorded experiences.
