looking at the docs I cannot find the AT+UPING command for the sara-r4 module 🥲 Am I missing something?

Yeah, I didn't check well the type of SARA-R4 mounted on the MKR NB 1500 and the UPING command is not available for this specific modem while for other (SARA-R422 SARA-R422M10S SARA-R422M8S SARA-R422S LEXI-R4) yes. I will close this PR
