I'm not sure if this is something you all would want to add to the official checkout action or not. But I needed to use app auth in on one of my workflows so that I didn't need to create a personal access token with access to all of my personal private repos and add it to a work repo's secrets.
This PR is not complete. It's missing docs, tests, error handling, etc. But I can work on adding those things (with maybe a bit of guidance on the tests) if this is something that would get merged.
