Bumping from 1.87 to 1.88 provides `if let` chains. If there isn't anything specific holding back an MSRV bump, we might as well make use of that. Clippy produces a lot of lints with this. It can fix them automatically, but produces a large diff. For now, this disables the `clippy::collapsible_if` lint. We can potentially enable that on a per-module basis so this later to not cause quite so many conflicts with other PRs. Lints applied with `cargo +nightly clippy --fix --all` and formatted with `cargo +nightly fmt`.
