VLOOKUPs and INDEX MATCH expert : from data plumber to strategic advisor. Last week, our CFO Pauline Bellée Babel and Albert Malikov from Stacks sat down with finance leaders in Paris to discuss what's really stopping finance teams from adopting AI. Pauline shares her perspective on living this shift, the most important change in her career: from being the fastest at Excel to understanding how AI redefines the CFO role. Worth a read 👇🏻
At EY, I was considered a strong analyst. What made me strong? VLOOKUPs and INDEX MATCH. Earlier this week, I had the pleasure to discuss with Albert Malikov from Stacks about what's really stopping finance teams from adopting AI. The conversation took me back to those days. I was a data plumber, not a strategic advisor. Today, AI handles that in just seconds. And that shift, is the most important change I've lived in my career. Most finance teams haven't made that shift yet, even though the technology is there. What I've learned from deploying AI inside our own finance function is that crossing the adoption gap comes down to three things. Trust first. Finance is zero-error by nature. You don't adopt AI because it's exciting, but when you've seen it work on something low-stakes, failed a few times in a safe environment, and built confidence progressively. Governance second. A lot of companies have AI happening in shadow IT. Getting that structure in place early is what separates a scattered experiment from something real. ROI clarity third. The question "how much does AI save?" is almost unanswerable in the abstract. What works is showing a specific before/after: this thing used to take four hours, now it takes twenty minutes. The CFO's instinct is to control. My job has been to resist that instinct just long enough for experimentation to show results, while keeping the guardrails in place. It's uncomfortable, but it's necessary if you want your team to actually adopt AI and not just talk about it. By 2030, do you see fewer finance teams doing more, or the same people doing fundamentally different work? Thanks Albert for pushing the conversation forward on what finance leadership actually looks like in the AI era. #CFO #AI #Finance
