Where did you get his first middle name ("Avis") from?

I think this is incorrect - I think it should be "Aris".

Please email me at jim77742@gmail.com to discuss. I'm the keeper of the family tree. Jim77742 (talk) 11:38, 31 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hey Jim, the middle name "Avis" comes from the cricket-related references on the page - both Cricinfo and CricketArchive (the latter is now behind a paywall). The government source for his OAM however uses "Aris", so I've updated the page citing this. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 21:00, 31 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Two additional publications Djan Khoe

Dear Jevansen, I recently found two publications that may be interesting for the article. One publications is about my Master Thesis work, published in the Proceedings of the IEEE, the top journal of IEEE. Another publication is about a world record with a silica optical fiber transmission, a result obtained in collaboration with Philips. They have been included in the NL article Khoe0005 (talk) 23:02, 17 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

The above person was my great Uncle. I have detailed this in my biography which is free to read Major Tom and the secret ‘M’ device – Brian's historical adventure books If you have the time or inclination, it would be great if you could update the Wikipedia entry to read something like that for his good friend Major Harry Harcourt. Hi Jevansen,

I hope you're well.

I’m reaching out on behalf of a digital marketing agency that currently manages Batch Mewing, a business owned by former swimmer Andrew Mewing. We’ve noticed that you've made significant edits to Andrew’s Wikipedia page, and we’re wondering if you would be able to add a backlink to the homepage of their website: www.batchmewing.com.au.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if this is something you'd be able to assist with. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,

Possibly Living People category

[edit]

Hi Jevansen, I see you're adding the Possibly Living People category to a lot of pages. However, it should only be used for individuals 90+ when there has been no evidence of them being alive for 10+ years. It shouldn't be added to pages like Dorothea Phillips (actress), when the page is sourced with 2019 and 2021 interviews with her. Thanks Jkaharper (talk) 01:09, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Understood ... though I think she has passed away. There was a social media post, listing her as recently deceased, which comes up as the first result of a "name" + "death" google search. I've just found a themoviedb.org entry for her with a DOD as well. None of these are citable of course. The latter is from a "community built" database and I can't even link to it here because we have it blacklisted. Jevansen (talk) 01:33, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Frank Lloyd Australian Actor

[edit]

I need help to upload an image of Frank Lloyd the Australia Actor who played Neville McPhee in Home and Away we cannot use commons because of copyright, but can be uploaded as a fair-us as actor has passed away in 1995, a replacement picture is not obtainable ~2026-94455-6 (talk) 01:10, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi. You'll need to register for an account in order to upload a file. Go to Wikipedia:File upload wizard and click "Upload a non-free file". After uploading the file, you'll be asked for a description, eg "Actor Frank Lloyd". For step 3, select "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use" followed by "This is a historical portrait of a person no longer alive". When it asks for a fair use rationale, I'd just copy one used for a related figure - eg File:Timothy Conigrave.jpg (an actor who died in 1994). Jevansen (talk) 02:08, 12 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Qualitative Research / Documentary for Wikimedia

[edit]

Hi Jevansen, I’m an independent researcher conducting qualitative research for Wikimedia about the motivations and work practices of top Wikipedia contributors. It would involve one interview (about an hour or so long) and we would be happy to provide compensation for your time. The research may be used by Wikimedia to design new tools for Wikipedians. We may also edit the same interviews into something more akin to a documentary. Let me know if you’re interested and I'll provide more details. Thanks! Removing pages from watchlist

[edit]

Over the past 10 years I uploaded countless posters related to Hindi cinema without removing them from my watchlist (they all belong under Category:Film posters for Hindi-language films added by you). Now that I've minimized my contributions to Hindi cinema, I want them all removed. Is there no way possible? I found a megawatch option, but not a mega-unwatch. It is cluttering my watchlist. Kailash29792 (talk) 11:13, 26 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Do you have AWB? If you go to "Edit raw watchlist" and paste all pages into an AWB list, you can use "list comparer" to match against pages also in Category:Film posters for Hindi-language films . That will produce a list of pages unique to your watchlist which you can simply paste over those in the raw watchlist. Jevansen (talk) 20:14, 26 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

QuickCategories

[edit]

Hi. I had to remove several examples of Category:20th-century Austrian women scientists and Category:20th-century Canadian women scientists from pages you added to Category:20th-century Austrian women physicists and Category:20th-century Canadian women physicists per WP:SUPERCAT. So I'm stopping by to suggest looking at QuickCategories since it allows you to do the job more smoothly and quickly without having to remove supercats individually or letting some slip through the cracks; check this from Smasongarrison for instance. The template for removing categories is very straightforward; I often use LibreOffice Calc to implement it. ミラP@Miraclepine 18:48, 27 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Miraclepine. It's not an issue with Cat-a-lot. This was done deliberately. I constantly get users reverting me when I remove more broad occupation categories that have been diffused. Eg a Canadian women scientist who is a physicist, but also works in one of more other scientific fields (for which we don't have a century category). So lately I've been a lot more selective in order to avoid such hassle. Eg in this instance, I removed the category from those I could identify as being only physicists. Jevansen (talk) 20:10, 27 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Well, then try working it out with them by explaining the SUPERCAT issue on their talk pages, namely how Special:Search addresses this issue with the deepcat:"[category]" function. If it doesn't work, consider reporting them to ANI for IDHT. Maybe a policy discussion on whether to change SUPERCAT might be a possibility, but for now we'll have to go with the norm for now. ミラP@Miraclepine 19:06, 28 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Adding Wikiprojects, please add Assessments

[edit]

Greetings, Throughout February (and earlier) I've been chipping away at Category:Unassessed biography (musicians) articles and Category:Unassessed biography (sports and games) articles, making progress reducing those backlogs. Today, I see an increase for both categories. While it's nice and helpful to add talk page WikiProjects, imo, it's even nicer to do an assessment while "in there". (Rater tool) Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 16:57, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Joe. I understand it can be frustrating when the numbers jump like that. Like I mentioned last time you brought this up, I do have the rater tool and have utilised it depending on the task being undertaken. If I've identified a large grouping of bios needing to be added to a work group, it's much more practical to do an AWB run. They were already unassessed bio articles, they're just now in an additional grouping. Jevansen (talk) 20:37, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank for your answer. I just have to learn to be more patient with myself. Sometimes it seems like I'm the only person helping to clear those categories, and sure could use help working on those. Any idea of how to get more people helping? I know we are all volunteers here, so that may not be possible considering the many other Wikipedia activities available. JoeNMLC (talk) 21:05, 1 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate the effort Joe. For what it's worth, I've spent an hour this morning working through Category:Unassessed biography (sports and games) articles with the rater tool. You might be best off targeting specific projects for assistance, rather than a general call to arms. So for Bio/Musicians, the biggest backlog by far, you could make a plea for assistance at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Musicians. Users will be more likely to help if it's a topic of interest to them and a project/work group should ideally be taking some responsibility for the maintenance of articles under their remit. Jevansen (talk) 00:32, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much for your efforts. For the Musicians WP, I asked for help on the Talk and updated WP page with Category counts, hoping for additional help. Thanks for your advice. Besides assessments, I also "dabble" with Unreferenced articles as an interesting change of pace. Cheers, JoeNMLC (talk) 15:10, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Priya (1978 film)

[edit]

Mainly about a Tamil film, the partially reshot Kannada version was released in 1979 but does not have enough content to warrant a separate article Priya (1979 film). Should 1979-related categories be added to it? Kailash29792 (talk) 09:07, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

1979 Kannada language films is definitely appropriate, which I saw you've added. For genre & county categories I'd stick to the original release year of 1978. So current version is best (in my opinion). Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 09:21, 4 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Women poet categories

[edit]

When creating biography categories for the 20th or 21st century, it's usually more convenient to do the same for the other century, especially for content creators who want to use this same 20th/21st-century set when creating articles for people with a career spanning both centuries (there's a lot, after all). I had to create several "21st-century [nationality] women poets" cats since many of the "20th-century [nationality] women poets" ones you made didn't have one. ミラP@Miraclepine 22:11, 8 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Yes, I could, depending on the number of applicable articles. Where does that end though? If we're creating 21st-century categories, due to the existence of 20th-century cats, should we also not be creating the other adjacent category of 19th-century [nationality & occupation]? .Then, having a 19th-century category would necessitate creating an 18th-century category etc, using the same principle. Jevansen (talk) 23:24, 8 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't saying it would be mandatory for all centuries (especially given that women biographies become less frequent during or before the 19th-century), just that the 20th and 21st centuries alone should be prioritized given the relative abundance of biographies in both eras. ミラP@Miraclepine 02:19, 9 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Creating categories

[edit]

Hi, a year ago you created Category:Cyclists from Greater Poland Voivodeship and many others that are now grandchild sub-cats of Category:Polish sportspeople by voivodeship and sport.

When you did this, you created most of them as sub-cats of only one parent; in that case, the only parent was Sportspeople from Greater Poland Voivodeship.

Categories of that type are logical intersections of more than one hierarchy, so that one should have also been parented in Polish cyclists.

I have now checked the parenting of that set, but when you create categories in future, please do add more than one parent if you can. Also, if there are other sets of categories that you have set up, please go back over your work and add more parent categories as appropriate. – Fayenatic London 23:03, 16 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

I've come across this often, @Fayenatic london. @Jevansen please be more careful. Because of your high volume, you really need to hold yourself to a higher standard.SMasonGarrison 03:26, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Mason. Following this (original) message, I spent much of 17 March 2026 retrospectively adding additional parents to my past category creations, as per the request. This was an earnest attempt to promptly address the issue. Unfortunately, as I've learned from you today, the query I made wasn't able to capture every under-categorized category. I undertook the same task again this afternoon with more luck and was able to identify further historic categories that could be improved with further categories. I want to note, at least for the benefit of Fayenatic, that any relevant categories you're coming across, like Category:Golfers from Gauteng which you brought up today, were from before this was first raised with me. Jevansen (talk) 06:44, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for doing this, Jevansen. You probably know this already, but just in case: when looking at "my contributions", you can filter by Namespace and select Category, to look just through your category work. – Fayenatic London 08:08, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Moving to mainspace check

[edit]

Hello, can you please check if this article User:ZZ47/Club All Youth Linkage is ready to move into mainspace? ZZ47 (talk) 06:49, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey ZZ47. The target page, Club All Youth Linkage, was made a redirect only yesterday as the result of an AfD discussion. It would be advisable in future to make improvements to an article during the period the page is up for deletion.
To move this article from your user space to main, I'd have to delete the existing redirect. That's only appropriate if the page doesn't have an extensive edit history (WP:MOR), which this does having previously been an article from 2011 to 2026. That would be lost if I performed the merge.
To recreate this page, you'd need to just paste what you have in your user space into the existing Club All Youth Linkage page. Please only do so if you're confident you have addressed any concerns raised in the AfD. The sources at present all do seem to be WP:ROUTINE (eg match reports). Try to find some more in depth sources if you can. Jevansen (talk) 10:56, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:1930 Czech films

Hello, Jevansen,

I just tagged a lot of categories you created for Czech films but the were really filling up your User talk page so I rolled back my edits. You can see what they were by looking at the page history. It looks like another editor created a new set of similar categories because of the politican name changes of the Czech Republic but you can check that out if you have objections. It looks like a valid name change to me.

I just noticed that you now have made over 5M edits! That's amazing! I can't believe you haven't burned out. Kudos for all of the work you do in categories and elsewhere. Liz Read! Talk! 19:51, 25 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. You've recently added Category:20th-century English journalists to articles already included in Category:20th-century English male journalists. Hello Jevansen

[edit]

I noticed you have been editing Brett Salisbury wiki page. I found his website through his brother Sean Salisbury. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brett_Salisbury I then found some things that I thought would be important to add as I googled Brett? Should these things be added to his page? Morph, Sloan, Male Model?

1. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2086154/ The page says he's the Creator of Morph by House of Salisbury and a male model. That led me to these pages...

2. https://www.houseofsalisbury.com/creator

3. https://thecommercialmale.com/

4. SLOAN: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4t2L1H5UwfGrJCXJp3P8XV his bio is listed

5. MORPH: https://www.morphfragrance.com/ https://www.morphfragrance.com/scents-that-changed-the-world

6. I went through the list male models and found this when I clicked on https://thecommercialmale.com/ website under Hoyt Richards name who is ranked number 27: https://web.archive.org/web/20130630000757/http://shine.yahoo.com/beauty/vogue-magazine-names-top-25-male-models-ever-104000311.html L'Uomo Vogue (now defunct it says)

7. His team is also listed from 1993 in the Hall of Fame at Wayne State: https://wscwildcats.com/honors/hall-of-fame/1993-football-team/81 8. I also found in a search that the offense has a Division 2 record never achieved before or after that every time they touched the ball on offense they averaged 8.8 yards per play? I couldn't believe AI so I looked..http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/DI/2000/Div2.pdf

Anyway. Take care Jevansen ~2026-33425-36 (talk) 20:39, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sorry one last thing..

It says is ranked number 96 out of 106 male models which I just noticed: https://thecommercialmale.com/ ~2026-33425-36 (talk) 20:50, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Re: Brett Salisbury modeling career — Vogue Top 25 source

[edit]

Hi Jevansen, just wanted to add one thing to the note above regarding Brett Salisbury. The same archived Vogue/Yahoo Shine source referenced in that message also lists Brett Salisbury at NUMBER 15 on L'Uomo Vogue's Top 25 Male Models Ever. The source is here: https://web.archive.org/web/20130630000757/http://shine.yahoo.com/beauty/vogue-magazine-names-top-25-male-models-ever-104000311.html — it also includes a detailed modeling career summary covering Helsinki, Milan, Armani, Laura Biagiotti, ~2026-34375-49 (talk) 00:48, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey. I don't have any particular interest in either college football or male models. Any edits I've made to that page would be of the drive-by nature. You should post any suggested edits at Talk:Brett Salisbury and if you do please also disclose your connection to the subject. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 01:04, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question about category removals (Bengali television programming)

[edit]

Hi Jevansen, hope you're doing well. I noticed you recently removed Category:Bengali-language television programming in India from a few television show articles (like Amader Ei Poth Jodi Na Sesh Hoy, Gaatchora, and Guddi) using Cat-a-lot, and you mentioned in your edit summary that it has a diffusing category. I'm still relatively new to editing and trying to get a better grip on how Wikipedia's categorization works. Could you help me understand which specific subcategory is diffusing this one for these shows? I mean, I just want to make sure I understand the standard practice so I can figure things out things correctly in the future. Thanks for your time and help in making the Wikipedia such a nice place to work in! Itcouldbepossible Talk 02:23, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey. If a category has been "diffused" that means it has been broken down into a smaller, more specific subcategory or subcategories. Star Jalsha original programming is a subcategory of Category:Bengali-language television programming in India (the "parent" category). A page should have only the most specific category in a category tree, so any article with "Star Jalsha original programming" doesn't need the parent category as well. Jevansen (talk) 03:26, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ahh well...that makes perfect sense now. I was actually never aware of this rule that articles should only carry the most specific subcategory in the tree rather than the parent ones too. Will definitely keep this in mind for my own future edits so that I don't end up double-categorizing things. I also just wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you for all your hard work on Wikipedia. It's a well known fact that you've been contributing massively since the early days of the project and the sheer amount of maintenance and clean-up you handle to keep the encyclopedia organized is mind boggling. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out. Have a great week ahead! Itcouldbepossible Talk 16:10, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

AWB quirk

[edit]

AWB has a habit of removing commented-out {{coord}} templates from the |resting_place_coordinates= and |burial_coordinates= fields in infoboxes and reinserting them, not commented out, at the bottom of articles, which puts the articles into the maintenance category Category:Pages with malformed coordinate tags, since the articles now have {{coord}} templates without any coordinates filled in. This happens even if the intended edit has nothing to do with an infobox or coordinates, as in your edits to Eric Dowdle, John Shallman, and some other articles. Please preview your edits to biographical articles to make sure that this isn't happening. Deor (talk) 14:02, 5 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Regarding your recent edits to Artem Chernobay when you modified the page, you introduced unknown parameters. Just because you specify |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= must be defined in the template. You can look at the documentation for the template you are using but it is also helpful to use the preview button before you save your edit; this helps you find any errors you have made and ensure that the values you have added are displaying correctly. Below the edit box is a Show preview button. Pressing this will show you what the page will look like without actually saving it. It is strongly recommended that you use this before saving. Note I have likely fixed the error by now so check the history of the page to see how it was fixed. If you have any questions, contact the help desk for assistance. Thank you. Category Query

[edit]

Hello, Jevansen,

In my opinion, you are the most efficient editor I know for filling newly created categories in seconds. I don't really know much about category tools like Cat-A-Lot and so I have a favor to ask. Minas Gerais is one state in Brazil of which there are 27. An editor decided to take one decade, 1960s, out of all of the decades that cover the timeline of Brazil, Category:Establishments in Brazil by year, and create 4 annual categories for establishments in that one state for that one decade (see Category:Establishments in Minas Gerais by year). For three of these categories there was just 1 or 2 articles and it was easy to recategorize them. But for 1962, Category:1962 establishments in Minas Gerais, they placed 154 articles in it for no apparent reason. I looked to see if there was anything significant about this year for this particular area of Brazil and I could not find anything of note.

I was hoping that you could use your skills to remove Category:1962 establishments in Minas Gerais from these articles. I could do so manually but it was probably take part of an hour and I think it's a task you could do in seconds. If you could handle this, that would be great. I deal a lot with empty categories and I've never run into this particular problem before. The editor who did this is currently inactive or I would have asked them to handle this chore. Let me know if you have any questions. Liz Read! Talk! 22:05, 16 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi Liz. I've removed the category as suggested. It appears to be a long established state skimming the Minas Gerais article, and beyond the current flag being adopted in 1963, there wasn't much going on in this period, so not sure what the story is here. Very strange. Regards. Jevansen (talk) 00:04, 17 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Male artist categories

[edit]

Hi. I just noticed that you're adding "XXth nationality male painters/sculptors" in a separate edit from removing "XXth nationality male artists" ((,, /), even though it can be easily done with Cat-a-lot. Any reason you didn't put these first two edits together, let alone with the "nationality male painters/sculptors" edits (which QuickCategories can do easily)? ミラP@Miraclepine 13:29, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Not practical to do it all with Cat-a-lot, as I'd have to manually select names in the category to move across, cross checking against my Petscan results, as oppose to simply pasting the results into AWB. Less likely to make mistakes this way. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 13:43, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Wouldn't a massive QuickCategories query easily take care of the situation? Check out Smasongarrison's queries for American poets https://quickcategories.toolforge.org/batch/11510/, https://quickcategories.toolforge.org/batch/11511/). All it takes is programming all of them at once by pasting everything into LibreOffice Calc (or something similar) and cutting out the tabspace afterwards in Notepad, as well as either Petscan or (as I usually prefer) Special:Search's incategory function. ミラP@Miraclepine 14:35, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
From what I understand of the tool, I'm confident that answer is yes, because I did investigate it when you first brought it to my attention, and took a look once more when you raised the tool with me again several months later. You still seem to be quite insistent that I utilise this tool, so I'll get straight to the point. As a general rule, a tool for me needs to be intuitive. I don't do manuals. Cat-a-lot can be as simple as clicking two clearly labelled buttons. My pet cat could use it walking on my keyboard. PetScan & AWB have been trial and error over many years. I'm still stumbling on new things with both. This leads us to the QuickCategories manual, which while not overly technical, still makes me want to put my head through a wood chipper by the time I'm halfway through it. Jevansen (talk) 01:52, 20 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just trying to follow this conversation makes smoke come out of my ears. There should really be a way to train us nontech folks to use these advanced tools beyond the basics like Twinkle. Liz Read! Talk! 04:10, 20 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's a very simple formula; I've tried it several times, it always works with little to no error, no need for a manual or excess edits: [page]|+[category to add]|-[category to remove]|-[category to remove]|-[category to remove] (or in a more recent case, [page]|+Category:19th-century French male photographers|-Category:19th-century French male artists|-Category:French male photographers; and that's not getting into [page]|+Category:19th-century French male photographers|+Category:20th-century French male photographers|-Category:19th-century French male artists|-Category:20th-century French male artists|-Category:French male photographers). And also, if a category to be removed is not in the target page or if a category to be added is already there, it will not affect the associated part of the target page. ミラP@Miraclepine 16:45, 21 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
