Nya Scandinavium (also referred to as the Arenakvarteret development project) is a planned multi-purpose indoor arena complex in Gothenburg, Sweden. Designed to replace the existing Scandinavium arena, the development aims to modernize the city's sports and event infrastructure along Valhallagatan.

Background

The original Scandinavium arena was opened in 1971 and has served as Gothenburg's main venue for major concerts, indoor sports, and international events such as the Gothenburg Horse Show and home games for Frölunda HC. However, due to aging facilities and technical constraints, the Gothenburg City Council (Kommunfullmäktige) approved plans for a major redevelopment of the event district.

In February 2025, the city council took a directional decision (inriktningsbeslut) to move forward with replacing Scandinavium with a new arena project located at the current site of Valhallabadet.

Architecture and design

In late 2025, an architectural competition for the new arena district was won by the proposal titled "Möta Göteborg", created by White Arkitekter in collaboration with Allies & Morrison, Arup, Stadia Design, and Sweco.

The overall master plan for the district includes:

A new primary multi-purpose main arena to replace Scandinavium.
An annexed smaller arena to replace the former Lisebergshallen.
Training rinks and logistics facilities.
Hotel accommodations and commercial public spaces.

Timeline

The redevelopment is scheduled to take place in phases across the 2030s:

2027: Final implementation decision (genomförandebeslut) and detailed plan approval by Gothenburg City Council.
2031: Completion of the new central bathhouse and sports halls north of Valhallagatan.
2034: Estimated completion of the new main arena.
