It is much cheaper for me to buy it in USA instead of South Africa, especially now that it is on sale at Walmart and Amazon etc. I would save about 40-50% buying it in USA on sale compared to in South Africa from iStore. So that is why I wanted to go the US buying route and then bring it back with me to South Africa.
Well, it appears then that this is your choice:
Lower price by 40-50% but with a warranty that you may not be able to utilize. So any repairs even during the warranty period, you would need to pay for out of pocket. It's a gamble. That said, we have owned maybe a dozen iPhones over the years and two received service under warranty or AppleCare; in both of those instances, Apple replaced them with new iPhones. Also one AppleTV was faulty, also replaced with a new device. Of the two Apple watches, neither have required warranty or AppleCare service. Of the maybe ~ one dozen Macs (iMacs, MacBook Airs, and Macbooks Pros), none have required warranty or AppleCare service. Apple products are pretty high quality.
As for declaring or not declaring the device for customs, that's your call but I always follow the letter of the law there. I have been selected at random in airports for a complete search of everything I had in all bags and everything, so I know it can happen.
