Eric M. E. hat dies repostetEric M. E. hat dies repostetI’m deeply saddened to learn of the death of Steve O’Hear, one of the most passionate and principled people I’ve had the fortune of meeting. Steve cared deeply about technology in Europe and the role of journalism in chronicling its rise. Looking back this evening on years of messages with Steve, what strikes me is how much he obsessed over honing his craft. From giving feedback on each other’s articles to swapping news tips, Steve always sought to be the best he could be. I distinctly remember spending countless nights chasing down stories into the early hours of the morning, terrified that Steve would scoop me the next day. Our journalistic rivalry made us both better reporters and it led to many years of friendship. Sifted’s coverage of Steve’s death is excellent and a fitting tribute, but I’ll add something I think that Steve would have appreciated: A scoop about him. Years ago, when we were both still in journalism, Steve and I plotted to leave our jobs and launch our own website covering startups in Europe together. We never made the leap, but we both enjoyed the idea of becoming colleagues. I hope that Steve’s legacy is one of passionate advocacy for disability rights, a fearless approach to journalism and a burning desire to excel in everything he did. Tech.eu Summit 2023 - the summary: 🥂 Networking in the most beautiful building in Belgium upon arrival. 🎙 Attending cool keynotes and panels on deeptech, the current start-up/VC climate, ChatGPT and much more, hosted by the best journalists and PRs. 🤝 Supporting the co-event of our client. ✅️ Playing conference bingo. Yes - hakuna matata, wetsuit, shitzu and spaghetti ice cream (among others) were truly said on stage by rockstar Cathy White during her fantastic VC panel. 💃 Ended the Summit dancing during the rooftop party with DJ'ing Tech.eu founder Robin Wauters and his kick-ass crew. It was a blast with the core team Cathy White, Eric M. E., Joe Krasean, and Mauro Alexis Battellini and so great to meet Dan Taylor, Nick Stevens and Mike Butcher MBE. Great to see lots of familiar faces and meet new ones - and I had the pleasure of hosting a panel of incredible people to discuss the next generation of VC. Thanks to Lina Zakarauskaite, Keji Mustapha and Natasha Lytton for joining me - and for allowing me to word salad the conversation. Hat tip to my fellow PRs for being as immature and fun as usual Eric M. E., Renske Jacobs, Joe Krasean and Mauro Alexis Battellini - see a picture of the words I needed to slip into my panel at the end of the pretty Brussel pics. I did all but 2…. I love collaboration, I get energy off people and being part of teams is what inspires me to do great work everyday! So I am beyond thrilled to see so many of my EMEA colleagues receiving awards at our Vegas SKO this week. Adam Matthews and Jorgen Espelund on stage getting global awards was an awesome representation for our region, and a true reflection of how great people and hard work is always rewarded. But the highlight was seeing our brilliant EMEA marketing team winning EMEA Theater Group MVP, lead by the formidable, inspiring and incredible Sarah Green. E. hat darauf reagiertI awoke to the news of Reverend Jesse Jackson passing 😢 I met the Reverend at my first tech PR job out of college at 22 years old back in 2014. I had the privilege of working with his organization the Rainbow 🌈 Push Colation to help drive PR, awareness, and urge for the big tech companies to release their diversity numbers. I got to see first hand the tireless efforts that the Reverend dedicated his life to for equality, civil rights and opportunities for Black Americans. It was the Reverend’s idea along with my first boss that I should own a Black tech PR agency. He’s had a profound impact on my career. Brennan Nevada Inc. Let his legacy live on in all of us. Especially his core values of looking out and speaking up for those who are overlooked!
