via Studio Scilicet This September, Sougwen Chung's solo exhibition Ecologies of Becoming will open in the German city of Heilbronn. Spanning two locations—Kunstverein Heilbronn and IPAI Foundation—the exhibition reflects on a decade of human-machine collaboration. Since building their very first Drawing Operations Unit Generation_1 (D.O.U.G._1) robotic system, Chung and Studio Scilicet have been exploring how machines can move beyond their role as tools to become creative partners, active collaborators. This ongoing body of work researches the evolving dynamics of co-creation, with a particular focus on the concepts of authorship and agency. Questions of control and the significance of this control remain central. This hybrid act of drawing combines performative and ritual elements and creates references to classical calligraphy, abstract painting, and computer-generated art. Ecologies of Becoming brings together works from the past generations of D.O.U.G_ and offers a glimpse of D.O.U.G_6, alongside process documentation, artefacts on canvas, robotic systems, and an installation. Proposal to replace "no jargon" with "be precise" as a cardinal rule for great #SciComm: 1. It intuitively prompts a circular workflow that includes evaluation, because... 2. "Precision" changes in context 3. It promotes equity 4. It tells you what to do instead This proposal prompted by a Bluesky post by Arielle Duhaime-Ross that I'll use as an example of why. Implied in their post (screenshotted below) is that saying "COVID is over" = saying "I don't recognize the harm it's still doing". Using "be precise" as a foundation for good comms gets us to: 1. Is implying "COVID is over" actually what we mean to say? 2. Maybe not; if our audience is interested in COVID protection policies, they're probably still concerned about COVID! 3. Rejecting this phrasing will help build a narrative that people are still at risk and protection policies would still do good (but if you're in a hostile system, you can argue for precise language with the justification that saying "during lockdowns" or similar elicits a different visceral emotional reaction than saying "during COVID", which is also true!) 4. So then, what exactly do we mean if not "during COVID"? Let's say that instead. "No jargon", as a rule, doesn't trigger any particular examination of this kind of phrasing, while "be precise" does.

What does it mean for an online environment to be "toxic" or "polluted" and can we borrow ideas from environmental modeling to make online spaces more livable? Bastian Greshake Tzovaras has a post announcing a new CAT Lab project, funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation, that invites communities and scientists to work together to imagine about online spaces as ecosystems and develop models inspired by ecology to understand their own communities (contact info in the post). When people talk about polluted or toxic online interactions, they can mean very different things, Bastian writes: - inflows of attention & the resulting social interactions - generative AI, plagiarism, misinformation - hostile behavior - unwanted material that platforms pump into our mental & social environments Many ideas of digital toxicity have misunderstood pollution, Bastian observes. They start by labeling certain behaviors or information as "toxic" and try to remove/ban them. But pollution is a powerful metaphor because it shows how sometimes-beneficial things can get out of balance in harmful ways. For example, a number of digital harms, Bastian writes, might be like "nonpoint source pollution" such as nitrogen in streams, which is the byproduct of many individual actions that aren't harmful in themselves but accumulate in harmful ways. Contemporary models of content moderation, which are based on a "dose response" model of toxicity, are largely unable to handle nonpoint source harms like this. This is not a new idea, but we're hoping to breathe life into it by bringing statistical and mathematical insights from environmental modeling - in conversation with the communities who care about these issues the most because they shape people's everyday lives.
