At BASF, our colleagues bring their passion for making a positive impact far beyond their daily work. Some volunteer as youth sports trainers, others support refugees learning new languages, and many engage in schools and local initiatives—each contributing to society in their own unique way. Today, we’re proud to celebrate another inspiring example of this commitment. One of our colleagues, Alexander Düfert, has just published a new book on modern synthetic methods. His mechanism‑driven, problem‑solving approach provides valuable guidance for PhD students and researchers, helping them navigate complex reaction pathways and develop strong scientific judgment. We are delighted to see this expertise shared with the broader scientific community and congratulate him on this achievement!
After an incredible 15+ year journey, my new book on synthetic methods has just hit the shelves. 😍 Over the years—across academic synthesis, catalysis, industrial R&D, and teaching—I repeatedly encountered the same challenge: choosing the optimal approach to a problem and uncertainty when reactions fail or give unexpected results. This book was written to address that gap. It follows a mechanism-driven, problem-solving approach, with detailed reaction conditions and full literature references, aimed at helping chemists develop sound judgment rather than memorization.
