Industry & Technology Hub
Industry and Technology Hub
The Industry & Technology Hub is committed to supporting the collaboration between the astronomy and satellite communities to allow both to flourish. The Hub is focused on educating and informing the satellite industry about their possible impact on astronomy and actively recruiting satellite stakeholders to participate in the collaboration with the astronomical community.
The objectives of the hub include:
- Deepen awareness within the satellite community on the potential of space-based projects to affect space sciences and astronomy and the work undertaken to date to develop mitigations to those effects.
- Facilitate the communication between the astronomical community and satellite constellation operators/owners.
- Enlist satellite constellation operators to embrace best practices and to employ known mitigations to reduce their impact on astronomy
- Encourage research and development of tools and resources needed to assess satellite systems and effective, affordable and accessible solutions to mitigate effects on astronomical discovery.
- Share insights to the drivers and value of ongoing development of the low Earth orbit for the purposes of communications, geo-intelligence and other applications.
There is no cost for satellite industry stakeholders to join the Industry & Technology Hub.
Membership in the I&T Hub is aimed at satellite sector stakeholder companies and their representatives, including satellite constellation operators, spacecraft manufacturers and those involved in space situational awareness services or various mitigation technologies.
Individuals may also join the Hub as volunteers and may be asked periodically to support research projects or provide feedback to the Hub member companies.
Resources for Member Companies include:
- Participation in the I&T Technical Advisory Group to exchange knowledge and promote awareness of ongoing research, reports and policy developments.
- Option of working with a skilled “Astronomer Guide” to deepen mutual understanding of astronomical activities and satellite projects
- Access to resources including directories of mitigation tools and resources, SatHub observation campaigns, etc.
To join, just email: industry-tech@cps.iau.org
Industry & Technology Hub Leads: Tim Stevenson (SKAO) and Chris Hofer (Amazon Kuiper)
Advisor: Patricia Cooper (Constellation Advisory LLC)

- Create informational overview of optical and radio astronomy activities and the potential impact from satellites.
- Create informational materials on the satellite sector and constellation development to build understanding within the astronomy community.
- Consolidate a repository of current technical analysis, studies, best practices and mitigations to date for easy industry reference.
- Make astronomer advisors available as pathfinders.
The actions taken by satellite industry stakeholders to mitigate their constellation plans for astronomy concerns were discussed at the UNOOSA/SKAO Workshop on Dark and Quiet Skies for Science and Society in December 2025. Find the presentations made by satellite industry speakers below for reference:
- Encourage industry to share satellite location data and support ongoing creation of space data repositories for observatory scheduling purposes.
- Promote development of simulation software for early predictive analysis.
- Catalogue available test facilities for prototype ground testing.
- Leverage coordinated observation networks to measure brightness of satellites in orbit.
- Share mitigation techniques implemented and support ongoing R&D into new mitigation solutions
