“Whether it is through the renovation of existing campus buildings or new construction, the design of academic space must engage directly with how knowledge is produced and shared.” Principal Carisima Koenig AIA shares how the evolving landscape in learning today blurs the boundaries between classroom, lab, and field. #highereducation #perkinseastman

From historic silos to a new community hub, ABC 7News tours the new Reservoir District at the former McMillan Sand Filtration Site in Washington, D.C. with principal Matthew Bell, FAIA FCNU. Created to bring clean drinking water to the nation's capital, it served the city for decades and is now serving the community in a new way, more than 100 years later. Now a new master plan and community center by Perkins Eastman is helping revitalize the site. "The idea was to make a mixed-use development that would retain the best aspects of the historic features of the site, but bring new development and open space," Bell explained. The master plan features over 500 apartments and 100 townhouses, some slated as affordable housing, a recreation center, and the newest, largest park in the city since 1903.

To monitor sustainability across our work, we asked our design teams to provide basic information on the materials in our work. With the data in hand, we can make strategic improvements, starting with our Materials Action Plan (MAP), which is helping our design teams act on the Common Materials Framework, a shared language for product sustainability developed by mindful materials. We now have 190 projects that report materials data through the AIA Materials Pledge using the Common Materials Framework, supporting shared industry disclosure. 🔗 Full report link in comments #sustainability #perkinseastman #materials

Wallpaper* checks into the Fairmont Hanoi in Vietnam, calling it “a stylish, modern hub that fits the city’s warmth and liveliness like a glove.” Located in Hanoi’s French Quarter, just a block from the garden-lined Hoan Kiem Lake, the hotel reflects the area’s historic influence. The design team sought to create an architectural character that bridges modern and traditional styles as visitors flow inside and out. The exterior’s varied massing and heights channel local shops and restaurants that line the streets of the French Quarter, while the two-story base colonnade reinterprets Hanoi’s traditional French Colonial architecture. These details provide a modern interpretation of the past while also creating its own destination within the city. Last week at the Urban Land Institute Spring Meeting, Perkins Eastman was proud to serve as a corporate partner and highlight our work locally. We participated in three meaningful discussions on the future of Nashville with the incoming implementation of our East Bank development plan – 338 acres and 22 million square feet of new development, replete with new parks and multimodal streets and trails across a two-mile-long stretch of the Cumberland River. The plan will extend the booming downtown and Music Row district with a direct connection to the new Tennessee Titans Stadium, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and mixed-use developments which will bring much needed housing and culture to the city’s east side. The city is exploding in growth with nearly 100 new residents per day and the addition serves as a vital new expansion. On Tuesday, we joined The Fallon Company for a tour of the site. On Thursday, Eric Fang presented at the Public Development and Infrastructure Council day, which was followed by a panel discussion with the Public Private Partnerships Council with Vaughan Davies, moderated by Hilary Kinder Bertsch, FAIA. It was great to have so many meaningful discussions on the city's continued growth with our clients, partners, and industry colleagues. As Office of Mayor Freddie O'Connell said, the transformative plan is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the city. It also serves as an example of the potential of urban planning when public and private partners come together with a shared vision for the community.
