What if we could use molecules that plants naturally produce to influence how they grow and perform? That’s the question scientists are exploring with microRNAs. Professor Pierdomenico Perata from the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, Italy, explains how research has shown that microRNAs can be applied externally to influence different physiological processes in plants. The microRNAs used in this approach come from natural sources. Other plants can act as donors, providing specific combinations of microRNAs that are then used in RNA spray technology. It’s a fascinating area of plant science, and one that could open up new ways to work with the biology that is already there.
