About us
At Mohawk College, IDEAWORKS fills the space between research and solutions by delivering customized support to organizations. As an active hub of applied research and innovation, we provide our industry and community partners access to faculty and staff expertise, an inspired student workforce, exceptional facilities and top technology. And, for Mohawk students, IDEAWORKS offers an environment that combines hands-on learning and advanced skills development. How does IDEAWORKS work? Mohawk faculty, staff and students collaborate with industry partners to complete real-world projects, which are often funded by provincial and federal agencies. These projects aim to address specific industry needs and to provide small businesses and other organizations with access to the resources they require to become more productive, innovative and competitive. Areas of Specialization: IDEAWORKS is home to innovation centres in eHealth/mHealth, Medical Technologies, Energy and Additive Manufacturing. IDEAWORKS can also partner on projects that don't fit within the expertise available in our research centres but are linked to Mohawk's other areas of knowledge, such as VR/AR, social innovation, digital media and more. Our research centres are supported by specialized facilities that provide our partners with access to leading-edge equipment, technical know-how and training opportunities.

In recognition of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, IDEAWORKS at Mohawk College is proud to highlight the lasting footprint of our three-year Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)-funded Dimensions Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Capacity Building initiative. Through this foundational work, we focused on systemic change by embedding EDI principles, accessibility, and bias-aware practices into our training, communications, and institutional decision-making. We are immensely proud of how these efforts helped: 🚀Launch and strengthen inclusive spaces like the Black & Racialized Student Success Centre. 🤝 Enhance and expand programming for Social Inc. 💡 Advance critical, actionable commitments through the Scarborough Charter on anti-Black racism. These initiatives successfully built a supportive, equitable environment where students and researchers can thrive across our campuses. Looking ahead to the next chapter: Following our recent celebration of the newly announced $100,000 Dimensions Canada grant, we are ready to scale these proven frameworks with our partners Fanshawe Centre for Research & Innovation (CRI) and Research & Innovation Lambton College. Today, we celebrate the stable foundation we’ve built, and look forward to the collaborative journey ahead. 🍁 We acknowledge the support of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). This #WorldBeeDay 🐝, IDEAWORKS at Mohawk College is proud to highlight two vital research initiatives supported by the Steeves Family Innovation Fund, aimed at protecting both our pollinators and the local beekeeping industry. Here is a closer look at how we are collaborating with local experts to drive change: 🐝 Investigating Varroa Mite Resistance Partnering with the experts at Backed By Bees, our researchers are tackling one of the greatest global threats to bee survival. By studying amitraz resistance in local colonies, we aim to uncover better ways to protect bee health and remain, as David Stotesbury, Co-founder at Backed By Bees, says, "even better stewards of the environment." 🤝 Beyond Honey: Creating Diverse Livelihoods Beekeeping is a vital agricultural business, but small-to-medium operators face unique operational challenges. In collaboration with the Ontario Beekeepers' Association, this project explores new growth, services, and innovative honey-based product streams to help local apiaries thrive. As Melanie Kempers, General Manager of the Ontario Beekeepers' Association, shares, these results will be "a valuable resource for Ontario’s beekeeping community." A massive thank you to the Steeves Family for their continued support in funding research that protects our ecosystems and strengthens our local economy. 💡 Explore more Steeves Family Innovation Fund projects: https://lnkd.in/ehprcU_Z 🔎 Learn more about the Steeves Family Innovation Fund: https://lnkd.in/gRPQmDCz Rebecca Ellis | Melanie Kempers | Tiffany Leighton, Ph.D. | David Stotesbury | Andrea Johnson #WorldBeeDay #AppliedResearch #Sustainability #OntarioBeekeeping
