The directors at Keynvor Morlift Ltd have been extremely supportive and encouraging, and that backing has given me the opportunity to keep progressing professionally. So, after a fair bit of graft alongside the day job, I’m pleased to have completed the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice. The qualification focuses on the practical side of safety leadership – implementing systems, monitoring performance, investigating incidents and influencing safety culture across organisations. It’s been a worthwhile process and a good opportunity to reflect on the work we’re doing within marine and offshore operations. Many thanks to the colleagues, assessors and the team at KML who supported the journey. On to the next stage of professional development.

Terry Buchanan liked thisTerry Buchanan liked thisAt the end of February, I had the honour of serving as a speaker panelist at PCC — the first‑ever Policy Case Competition at York University, presented by the School of Public Policy & Administration (SPPA). I spoke about the evolving role of AI across government and industry. There’s genuine excitement around the outcomes AI can unlock: greater efficiency, improved service delivery, and entirely new possibilities for how public institutions and organizations operate. At the same time, I emphasized a note of caution — much of this technology is still in its alpha and beta stages. Like self‑driving cars, it’s promising and powerful, but not yet ubiquitous. The key takeaway: focus on results and public value, not the technology itself. We also explored Ontario–municipal AI industry partnerships. I stressed that meaningful progress will come from partnerships, not traditional procurement. Municipalities and vendors need to work toward mutual benefit, with safeguards front and centre — protecting privacy, ensuring ethical use, and maintaining public trust across all levels of government. For students, my advice was straightforward: • Build strong critical thinking skills — including knowing when to trust, and when to question, technology. • Avoid silos by learning from both public and private sectors. • Embrace cross‑pollination of ideas, because the best solutions often emerge from diverse perspectives. What impressed me most was the real‑world practicality of the competition and the participation across multiple York University faculties and levels of study — a powerful model for experiential learning in public policy. Kudos to the organizers, and special recognition to Ishvita Sharma and her organizing team for bringing this inaugural competition to life.
