Two major Canadian law firms have rolled out the legal AI platform Harvey firmwide in the last week. Gowling WLG was first off the mark on July 11, announcing it was adopting Harvey, which is purpose-built for the legal profession, across all practice areas in its seven Canadian offices, “marking a Canadian legal industry first.” A few days later, Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg also said it was making Harvey available to all professionals in its three-office firm. Over the last year, and particularly the last six months, the functionality of products like Harvey has advanced exponentially, said Al Hounsell, whose title at Gowlings is Canada Director of AI, Innovation and Knowledge. “We see this as not something to kick the tires and let people play with it and experiment. We think we're moving into that production phase where this is how law needs to be done going forward,” he said. “Gowling WLG is setting an incredibly high bar in Canadian legal innovation.
