Peter Kiss liked thisPeter Kiss liked thisThis last week I was in beautiful British Columbia attending the Critical Minerals Forum hosted by Energy and Mines🇨🇦 Now, you might question why a public affairs professional from the US is in a Canadian natural resources event. Initially, I questioned it to. However, my goal was to engage with First Nations who like my own tribe, are surrounded and intricately work with the mining industry. I was absolutely inspired by various Indigneous individuals and First Nations like the Talhtan and Nis’ga Nations in their ability to dictate their own resource management and development strategies with mining. The cooperation between First Nations, the Provincial and Federal governments, and the mining industry is far more advanced than anything in the US and provides a roadmap for tribal nations here to move forward. Mining revenue can build communities, sustaining communities, and create a opportunity for tribal nations to positively engage economically. It’s been done in Nevada but not nearly at the level as in British Columbia. From a public affairs perspective, this is a case study to learn from. Even in Metro Vancouver, a First Nations is leading the charge is building actual skyscrapers and redefining a skyline to provide critical infrastructure and housing for its people and the people of Metro Vancouver. It showed what is possible. You cannot have a model of certainty in working with tribal nations, it has to be predictability. The first one provides a checkmark in a EA process. The latter provides a continuous basis for understanding, relationship building, and expectation benchmarking. It makes for better development overall. Mining is not going any anytime soon in the Interior West, but by gathering data and knowledge from First Nations, it provides better opportunities for everyone. A huge thank you to Mark Stockton and Integra Resources for the invite, the engagement, seeing what can be achieved in mining, and for showing me the best food in the Pacific Northwest!

At Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2026, government and industry leaders highlighted the accelerating momentum behind Ontario’s critical minerals strategy and the development of the Ring of Fire, including major enabling infrastructure such as the Webequie Supply Road and Marten Falls Community Access Road. The projects will play a critical role in unlocking the region’s mineral potential—spanning chromite, copper, nickel, gold, and other strategic resources essential to global supply chains. Projects of this scale demand investment in people. Last month, the OIA welcomed learners for Week 1 of in-person training at the Kingbridge Centre in the Township of King. The program brought together Ontario Road Builders' Association (ORBA) memberco professionals and Ontario Ministry of Transportation/ Ministère des Transports de l’Ontario staff for a series of leadership and technical training sessions designed to strengthen the province’s transportation infrastructure workforce pipeline. 🎥 Watch the 2026 Week 1 recap here: https://lnkd.in/eVFYfVeX 👏 David Piccini x Stephen Lecce x Greg Rickford x Prabmeet Sarkaria

Amanda McCallum, ICD.D, Executive Director of Mining Industry NL joined the #MRR2025 podcast sponsored by WSP in Canada to talk about the incredible momentum in the province's mining sector. Here are the key takeaways you need to know: 📈 A Pillar of the NL Economy The mining industry is the 2nd largest contributor to Newfoundland and Labrador's provincial GDP at 9.3%. When combined with oil extraction, the extractive sector accounts for ~25% of the provincial GDP. Add in resource-based construction, and that number climbs to over one-third (33%) of the province's total GDP. 💰 Exploration is Booming Value creation starts with exploration, and NL is seeing massive (and new) investment. An incredible $1.168 BILLION has been invested in exploration from 2021-2025. This year (2025) alone saw $258 million in exploration expenditures—this is foreign direct investment, not recycled money. This activity is a huge economic driver, especially for rural NL. 🌍 A Top-Tier Global Player Newfoundland & Labrador isn't just a national leader—it's a global one. In the 2024 Fraser Institute survey, NL ranked #8 IN THE WORLD for investment attractiveness. The province also ranked #2 in Canada, second only to Saskatchewan. ✅ Major Milestones & Future Needs Big Win: The Valentine Lake Gold project poured its first gold in Q4. This is the first new "greenfield" mine (a brand new discovery) to be commissioned in Atlantic Canada in over 15 years! Key Needs: To continue this growth, the industry needs two critical things: Continued land accessibility for exploration. Access to power for development, expansion, and decarbonization (especially in Labrador West). Industry Jobs: The sector directly employs 8,600 people, primarily in rural communities. 🤝 Collaboration is Key Mining NL just hosted a roundtable with 45 senior stakeholders from industry and government. Key Outcome: The provincial government has committed to striking a joint working committee with industry to tackle challenges and keep the pipeline moving. New Program: Mining NL has officially launched "Mining Bright Futures," a new education and outreach program to connect with the next generation of the workforce. The message is clear: the mineral resources sector in NL is on a very positive trajectory, and collaboration will be key to accelerating that growth. Mining demand is rising. Permitting and public trust are becoming harder to achieve. That friction is where projects succeed or stall. From overlapping regulations to community expectations and ESG pressure, today’s mining projects require more than compliance. They require strategy from day one. The difference? Teams that start early, align across stakeholders, and build trust don’t just move faster. They actually get approved. In a new blog post, the Trinity Consultants team breaks down what’s changing and what it takes to keep projects moving. Three Canadian provinces are opening the floodgates for pipeline proposals, but industry observers are questioning the viability of a project that would ship oil across the country. The governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario are looking for companies to conduct a feasibility study into a new “economic and energy corridor,” including a possible pipeline from Alberta to Ontario. But there’s a “major impediment in between those provinces,” said Martin Pelletier, CFA, a senior portfolio manager at Wellington-Altus Private Counsel. “It’s called Manitoba.” Jeremy McCrea, CFA, an energy analyst at the BMO, echoed Pelletier’s criticism. Among the sticking points for investors are proposed federal policies like an emissions cap. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g_vdQcjy 📸 The Canadian Press file photo

Schedule risk is no longer a statistical debate—it is an executive accountability. Ontario and Gulf mega-projects forfeited $3.8 B last year to claims traceable to time overruns. Under ISO 31000, risk is the “effect of uncertainty on objectives”, yet CPM baselines on many 30-month EPC contracts are still generated with ±0 float tolerance. AACE 29R-03 recommends at least a P-80 confidence level, meaning you should plan for the 80th percentile finish date, not the optimistic P-20 date often baked into tender programs. FIDIC Red and Yellow Books reinforce this by granting time extensions only when “unforeseeable” delays exceed the contractor’s reasonable allowances. Ignoring those allowances is costly. Our review of 17 hospital and rail projects across Ontario, Texas and Riyadh showed average schedule contingency of 4.2 % against a realised variance of 11.7 %. Every 1 % schedule slip pushed indirect costs up by 0.6 %, eroding profit margins by up to 190 basis points. Worse, claim preparation and adjudication consumed 14,000 staff-hours—time your senior team could have spent on delivery. You can reverse that trend by embedding a probabilistic schedule review at each stage-gate. Start with a three-point estimate on every critical activity, apply a Monte Carlo run of 5,000 iterations, and plot P-50, P-75 and P-90 curves. Next, reserve a dynamic contingency equal to the P-75 less the baseline. Update the simulation monthly; when slippage probability exceeds 25 % on any path, trigger a re-sequencing workshop with design, procurement and field leads. This approach trimmed mean delay exposure by 36 % on two refinery revamps I audited last quarter, keeping the owner inside the liquidated-damages threshold. It also improved subcontractor cash flow forecasting accuracy by 18 % in the subsequent quarter with no additional software investment. How are you currently aligning contractual float with statistical reality? Reply or message me; your insight could help shape a regional benchmark. #Construction #BIM #RiskManagement #MENAConstruction #OntarioInfrastructure @CitiesCore CAT @Constrata Consultants
