Michael Dingle shared thisMichael Dingle shared thisMeet TELUS team member Stephanie Fauquier who will travel across Canada this summer to complete 10 triathlons (one in every province!) in honour of her mother, Dr. Robin McLeod. When Dr. McLeod was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2021, Stephanie chose to channel her feelings into action, and created Race with Steph to celebrate her mother and raise awareness and funds for the University of Toronto’s Tanz Centre for Neurodegenerative Disease Research. At the end of the summer, Steph will have completed over 500 kms of racing over 113 days. “There’s so much we don’t know about Alzheimer’s, and yet we know that it disproportionately affects women. We know that people with Alzheimer’s disease feel isolated, embarrassed and ashamed. I am racing to raise money and awareness for a disease that strips people of their dignity and autonomy” says Steph. Steph kicks off Race with Steph on May 28 in Victoria, British Columbia with a half-ironman. At work, Stephanie leads the TELUS Health | TELUS Santé strategy team, finding growth opportunities to improve our services and experiences to reach even more people. Stephanie takes pride in solving real-life problems that positively impact the quality of life for Canadians. Caroline Fanti pioneered hospital-wide Remote Care Monitoring in Canada. My 11 learnings from her eHealth 2025 presentation: For context, Caroline is the Director, Regional Surgical Services at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, which serves a geography the size of France. Since 2020, she’s led the hospital’s Remote Care Monitoring program (proudly powered by SeamlessMD!) which has grown hospital-wide to 17 clinical areas (e.g. ortho, women’s health, urology) and achieved major reductions in LOS, readmissions and ED visits. Now onto my learnings from Caroline… 1️⃣ You need an important WHY to keep the team motivated Caroline’s team has seen how Remote Care Monitoring has reduced anxiety and saved lives - which is a huge WHY that keeps pushing the team forward. 2️⃣ Create momentum by choosing high volume, high acuity, complex cases Starting with joint replacements allowed the hospital to get a quick early win - lots of patients benefit and there was a need to do more same-day surgery safely. 3️⃣ Remote Care Monitoring goes beyond symptom and vital signs monitoring Beyond monitoring patients remotely, they leveraged SeamlessMD to deliver evidence-based, condition-specific pathways via education, reminders and tasks - leading to more engaged patients. 4️⃣ Invest in interprofessional team involvement to customize every digital care pathway The hospital engaged physicians, nurses, PTs, dietitians, etc. in weekly sessions to collaborate and customize these best-practice pathways. This led to more staff promotion of the Remote Care Monitoring program, which led to high patient adoption. 5️⃣Enrolling patients as early as possible in a journey (e.g. pre-op) leads to better patient engagement Patients are in a better mindset to learn a new Digital tool before surgery instead of right afterwards. 6️⃣ 1 NP can monitor an average of 170+ patients 2.6 FTE NPs are monitoring 450 patients at a given time (M to F, business hours) 7️⃣ 85% of patient-reported issues are low-risk (e.g. constipation) and can be handled via automated, self-care education - avoiding phone calls and ED visits. 8️⃣ Readmissions are down by 74% and ER visits have dropped by 58% Patients in northern Ontario would often use the ER for minor issues - now many of those are avoided. 9️⃣ Post-op incision checks are now done through wound photo monitoring - often saving patients 5 hours of travel time. 🔟 Digital tools can be used to standardize pathways and reduce care variation, reducing Length of Stay by 49% E.g. previously LOS for spine surgery could range 1 to 11 days depending on the surgeon. Using SeamlessMD to deliver standardized care pathways has brought the average LOS down for spine surgery significantly. 1️⃣1️⃣ Remote Care Monitoring is saving patient lives! Caroline shared many stories of how her team caught pulmonary embolisms, bacterial meningitis, heart attacks and other deadly complications much sooner. Congrats on the amazing success!

We’re proud to share that Cardea Health has secured $350,000 in non-dilutive government financing to accelerate our work at the intersection of AI and healthcare. This support from the Government of Canada, delivered through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), is a strong vote of confidence in our vision to build AI-first clinical trial and RWE (Real World Evidence) infrastructure for North America. This funding enables us to deepen our investment in applied AI that transforms how patients are identified and matched into clinical trials for RWE initiatives across outpatient care settings. Our focus is on creating scalable, explainable, and compliant AI solutions that meaningfully reduce trial timelines, improve data quality, and expand patient access to research. With this support, we are well-positioned to become leaders in Clinical Trials and AI across North America, helping sponsors, sites, and physicians unlock the full potential of real-world clinical data. We’re grateful to the Government of Canada for backing Canadian AI innovation and helping companies like ours build globally competitive health-tech platforms. Bill C-72: Does it actually give Canada a healthcare "System"? The federal government recently introduced the Connected Care for Canadians Act to fix our fragmented data silos. On paper, it is a game changer. It aims to prohibit data blocking and mandate that vendors adopt common standards. But as a physician and investor, I have to ask: Is this a solution or just a new layer of bureaucracy? The Policy Paradox For Bill C-72 to move us from "13 Silos" to a "National Network," it has to overcome three massive policy hurdles: 1. Vendor Enforcement vs. Clinical Reality: The bill primarily targets IT vendors. It threatens fines for data blocking. But the problem isn't always a vendor refusing to share. Often, it is a provincial regulation or a hospital policy that cites "privacy concerns" to keep data locked away. We are punishing the plumbers when the city hasn't even approved the pipes. 2. The Federal-Provincial Friction: Health is provincial jurisdiction. Bill C-72 is a federal push. Unless every province aligns their specific health privacy acts with these new standards, we will still be trapped in a "Postal Code Lottery" where your data can't cross a provincial border even if the technology allows it. 3. The "Undefined Standard" Problem: The act refers to common standards but the final roadmap for these isn't due until 2027. We are passing laws for a standard that isn't fully built yet. For founders and investors, this creates a "waiting game" that stifles innovation today. A Better Path Forward? If we want a truly connected system, policy must move faster than the legislation: • Mandate Outcomes, Not just Tools: Policy should reward "Successful Data Handshakes" between entities rather than just checking a box for "Interoperable Software." • National Privacy Harmony: We need a pan-Canadian framework that makes "sharing for care" the default legal position, reducing the "risk aversion culture" that currently paralyzes administrators. • The AI Infrastructure Role: Legislation should explicitly clear the path for AI Voice Agents to act as the bridge between legacy systems while the longer-term standards are being debated. The Bottom Line Bill C-72 is a necessary first step, but it is not a "system" yet. A system requires more than a law against data blocking. It requires a cultural and political commitment to treat a Canadian's health data as a national asset rather than a provincial secret. Is Bill C-72 the "Big Bang" for Canadian HealthTech, or is it just another unfunded mandate? I would love to hear from policy wonks and founders on this. #CdnPoli #HealthPolicy #BillC72 #LearningWithRishad #Interoperability #HealthTech

Canadian healthcare is not well. It’s broken. We’re an “affordable laggard” — bottom 20th percentile of OECD countries across cost, access, and wait times. And we keep digging: fragmented records, limited interoperability, long wait times for specialists, fax machines still running, and national efforts like PrescribeIT — built to axe the fax — cancelled after hundreds of millions spent and limited traction. As a mom, a patient, and a caregiver, I see the cracks every day. They’re hurting families, clinicians, and the system itself. As an early-stage investor in Canada, I see the market opportunity and the talent. But we need more builders. Canadian #healthtech founders: the system won’t fix itself. Now is the moment. https://lnkd.in/drq48mZR
