While it is best to eliminate or passively control fall hazards, there are times when using personal protective equipment becomes the only option. To reduce injuries and fatalities from falls, it is essential that active fall protection systems, such as travel restraint and fall arrest systems, are properly engineered. So, where does one start with designing an active fall protection system? Introducing Fall Protection Engineering, an ASSP publication that focuses on the engineering of active fall protection. The authors of Fall Protection Engineering followed the guidelines outlined in the Z359 Fall Protection Code, particularly ANSI/ASSP Z359.6, which specifies and designs active fall protection systems. This book offers comprehensive guidance on the design, installation, and use of these complex systems. It covers various related topics, including the role of a qualified person, equations of motion, fall clearances, swing-fall dynamics, horizontal lifelines, and includes numerous case studies to integrate all these topics effectively. Available now at the ASSP Store. #FallProtectionEngineering #QualifiedPerson #ASSP

  • In our Ladder Safety Month outreach in March, we focused heavily on raising awareness about OSHA's fixed ladder fall protection requirements, which included a deadline of November 2036. OSHA has reopened discussion around fixed ladder fall protection requirements, following a petition submitted by some industry organizations. Public comments are open through June 5, 2026, and we encourage organizations to review the proposed changes, evaluate how they may impact their facilities, and participate in the conversation. Check out our blog post for more detailed information: https://hubs.ly/Q04jf1sX0 Visit our ladder safety page for additional details and links to the original petition, Federal Register notice and the public comment site. #LadderSafety #OSHAFallProtection #FallProtection

A story…and a challenge to you. 28 years ago today, I received a call that changed my life. It was May 22, 1998—the Friday before the holiday weekend, just like today. A client told me there had been a fall at a construction site—a water treatment plant in Florida—where a worker was bending rebar with a hickey bar on top of a 20-foot concrete wall. It slipped, and he fell headfirst toward the slab below. But, he didn’t hit the ground. He was caught by a horizontal lifeline I had designed. 🙏 In that moment, my job hit differently. It makes you pause and ask: Is this why the Lord put me here? Of course, I wasn’t the only one who made it happen—trainers, installers, decision-makers and most importantly, the workers—we all played a part. But in that instant, it became bigger than calculations and designs. It became about purpose… and about preventing the next one, because there are still too many injuries and fatalities that are preventable. Years later, at the 2010 ISFP Symposium in Baltimore, a presenter asked a powerful question: 💭 Imagine every year on May 22 at 10:15 am, every worker simultaneously “tests” their fall protection system… What would happen? Are you good… or hoping you are lucky?⚠️ You now know why I use May 22 and you can use a date that works for you. Over my posts next week , I’ll share what I look for in the field when evaluating systems and behaviors—the things that go beyond compliance and get to real protection. The Challenge: How can you apply this question, what can you use from what I share and what can you share to better protect your workers? If you haven’t checked them out already, our Stand-Down resources are still available here: 👇 🔗https://lnkd.in/gqzhJfH3 Thank you to my LJB Inc. teammates for compiling this material and to organizations like American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), International Society for Fall Protection (ISFP), @ANSI/ASSP Standards that help me continue to learn and share to protect workers at height. And thank you to Michael Derr for encouraging me to share this. 🤝 #Safety #FallProtection #NoExcuses #ConstructionSafety #Leadership #Purpose #StandDown #SafetyCulture #WorkingAtHeight

I’ve been reflecting a lot on our team’s “No Excuses” campaign from Stand-Down week. It pushed the edge a bit—and I love it. 👏 The creativity, the humor, and the willingness to try something different matters. Humor breaks down barriers and helps people relate—and that’s exactly what we need when we’re talking about something as serious as protecting people at height. For me, these videos are more than content—they’re a 30 second conversation starter 💬 and a catalyst for reflection. They challenge how we communicate… and how we ultimately protect workers. Here are a few questions they sparked for me: • Where have I—directly or indirectly—allowed an “excuse” to be rationalized? 🤔 • How are we communicating expectations? 📣 • What behaviors am I modeling and reinforcing? 👷♂️ • What have I allowed to go unchallenged? ⚠️ If you haven’t seen the videos yet, take a look and let me know what you think. And, use them as part of your training and tool box talks - they're available on YouTube👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gqzhJfH3 As importantly, I'm so thankful for our team.
