Canada’s defence future is being shaped on the ground—and the Edmonton region has a critical role to play. In this Edmonton Journal op-ed, our CEO Daryn Edgar, alongside other regional leaders outline why Edmonton is emerging as Western Canada’s defence and security hub: anchored by advanced manufacturing, world-class research and talent, strategic logistics infrastructure, and proximity to key military assets. Together, these strengths support national security, economic resilience, and Canada’s role in a more complex global environment. At Edmonton Global, we're excited to see collaboration in action across industry, post-secondary institutions, government, and partners through the Edmonton Region Defence Alliance (ERDA). It’s a powerful example of how regional alignment can translate into national and global impact. Proud to see the Edmonton Region so well represented in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh. Congratulations to Team Alberta and the companies who showed up ready to build relationships and open doors. The Edmonton region in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh ✈️ Just came back from an amazing trip with team Alberta for a life sciences mission to Dubai for World Health Expo, Abu Dubai and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The mission exceeded expectations with the expertise of the planning team Amanpreet Bhatti, Samantha Hay, Nicole Ng-Muk-Yuen – Team Alberta and our on ground support from Sesam Connect. I was humbled by our experience in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – not only full of business potential but the city greeted us with tremendous warmth and hospitality. This is where opportunity lives, we learned about Saudi’s Vision 2030 and how many of our companies can contribute to their future vision. My first visit to this beautiful country but not my last. A big kudos to the companies who joined for this mission and opened doors for themselves but also put Alberta on the map. Sinoveda Thoth BioSimulations Associated Health Systems Inc. This is exactly the kind of investment moment that reinforces where the Edmonton region is heading. With over $6.5M announced through the Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII), PrairiesCan is backing Edmonton-based innovators LogiCan Technologies Inc. and Zero Point Cryogenics to expand production of critical defence equipment — strengthening Canada’s defence industrial capacity at a pivotal time. From an Edmonton Region Defence Alliance (ERDA) perspective, this matters. As we work to advance the Edmonton region’s role in Canada’s defence and advanced manufacturing ecosystem, investments like this: • Strengthen domestic supply chains • Accelerate commercialization of homegrown innovation • Create high-skilled jobs • Signal confidence in Alberta’s industrial capabilities ERDA is focused on positioning the Edmonton region as a strategic hub for advanced manufacturing, dual-use, and defence technologies. Announcements like this don’t just support individual companies — they help anchor a broader regional value proposition around resilience, security, and made-in-Canada capacity. Proud to see federal partners investing in companies that are scaling right here in our region.
