Today, Physical Review A published our paper "Blockchain with Proof of Quantum Work," introducing a novel blockchain architecture in which mining requires a quantum computer. The peer-reviewed paper validates our quantum-powered method to create blockchain hashes through a new "proof of quantum work" consensus mechanism, leveraging beyond-classical quantum computation to make mining intractable for classical computers. This approach could reduce electricity costs by up to a factor of 1,000. D-Wave scientists deployed the blockchain across four of our annealing quantum processors geographically distributed across North America, demonstrating stable operation across hundreds of thousands of quantum hashing operations. Blockchain technology has applications across supply chain management, healthcare, identity verification, and decentralized finance. D-Wave plans to work with partners to bring to market products based on this new architecture.
