Quick look: 40865 Buddy the Elf

Posted by ,

It seems that licenced Christmas sets are a thing now, with the release of 40865 Buddy the Elf, among a bumper selection of six seasonal sets that are all available at LEGO.com today.

However, I don't think anyone will complain given it's based on the 2003 film Elf, one of the most beloved Christmas movies ever made.

BDP28W1: Airport terminal

Posted by ,

In the second of our series of articles contributed by designers of submissions in BrickLink Designer Program 2028 Wave 1 (formerly Series 12), Stefan aka DistractedBuilder describes his airport terminal:

I was at the airport when the finalists of BDP Series 11 were announced. Unfortunately, my submissions didn’t make the cut. I immediately started thinking about a new model for the next round when I realised that the answer was literally right in front of me.

LEGO has released multiple airport sets for kids over the past decades, but we’ve never had a fully detailed airport aimed at adult LEGO builders. That’s when I decided to accept the challenge and build an Airport Terminal for AFOLs. The result is the Airport Terminal.

BDP28W1: Medieval Cathedral

Posted by ,

Crowd support for BrickLink Designer Program 2028 Wave 1 (Formerly Series 12) has begun, so as has become customary, we'll be publishing a number of articles written by project designers.

If you'd like us to publish one, please read this article, Guidelines for contributing articles for publication at Brickset before submitting.

We'll kick-off with a fan favourite that has unfortunately not yet prevailed despite being revised several times and submitted into virtually every series: Arselus' Medieval Cathedral:

The Medieval Cathedral returns again! This iteration of the cathedral was a ground-up redesign focused on reducing part count and adjusting scale to fit with other BDP and official LEGO medieval buildings. I was able to reduce the part count from 4000 to 3130 (22% reduction!) and also increase the details on all sides of the building, including the interior.

Review: 11390 Dragon Ball: Shenron & Goku

Posted by ,

11390 Shenron & Goku adds yet another nostalgic licence to LEGO's portfolio, hoping to appeal to those who watched Dragon Ball on television in the 1990s and 2000s who are now adults with disposable income.

Whenever possible we ask subject-matter experts to write our reviews, so for this one I enlisted the help of Gamu, one of my son-in-laws, who's a passionate fan of the series.

Great Western Brick Show next weekend

Posted by ,

The UK's longest running LEGO show returns to STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon on the 10th and 11th of October.

More than 250 exhibitors, volunteers and traders will come together to create the Great Western Brick Show, which was established in 2002.

The displays will range from detailed railway layouts and complete cityscapes to castles, spacecraft, vehicles, engineering projects and more, all created by some of the best builders in the UK and international guests. I will be there contributing to the Great Ball Contraption layout so if you're attending do come and say hello.

There will also be 'Robot Battles' throughout the weekend. The format began at the show in 2016 and has gone on to become one of its most popular attractions. More than 50 roboteers are expected to be in attendance, bringing robots with different designs, tactics and capabilities to the arena. There'll also be an arena for visitors to participate.

Tickets are available here, and there's a lot more information about the event on Facebook.

These are the reviews that we've published recently:

21065 Sagrada Família

Like the basilica, the model is a work of art and a masterpiece

40897 Darth Vader's Lightsaber

Darth Vader's lightsaber is executed superbly, but its limited availability is frustrating

75457 Executor Super Star Destroyer

Depending on your perspective, this model's size is its greatest strength or a major issue

11383 Mayor Manor

A fine introduction to what will hopefully be an annual Halloween-themed collection

72158 Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly Battle

Set off on your Pokémon journey with a loyal Paldea region companion

21373 Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey has been critically acclaimed as a multi award winning period drama. This model is instantly identifiable as the primary filming location known as Highclere Castle
