According to the latest joint report by the European Commission and EUIPO - European Union Intellectual Property Office, over 196 million counterfeit items worth an estimated €6.3 billion were overall detained at the EU border and within the internal market. 🤝 This is achieved through teamwork. The results reflect the close cooperation between customs authorities, market surveillance authorities and police services, working together to detect and intercept counterfeit goods and reduce risks to consumer safety, fair competition and innovation. Key findings: • CDs/DVDs accounted for 29.3% of all detained items • Toys represented 19.65% of detained items • Trademarks were the most frequently infringed intellectual property rights 🛃 Customs authorities play a crucial role in this task at the EU’s external border. In 2025 alone, they detained around 42 million counterfeit items worth nearly €2 billion, the highest figure ever recorded for customs detentions. Most cases involved goods transported through express courier and postal consignments, often linked to e-commerce. The report highlights the growing scale and complexity of counterfeiting in the EU, as enforcement authorities face massive volumes of goods linked to e-commerce and increasingly fragmented supply chains. 🌐 To strengthen EU-wide coordination and better address these challenges, the EU Customs Reform will help equip customs across the EU with more modern, data-driven tools.
