🇪🇺Why FOSDEM is important! February was a month rich in political debate and technical discussions. It provided an opportunity for direct exchange with open source technology leaders and contributors. It highlighted new challenges related to governance, sustainability, and public digital infrastructure.. 🚀 Please read our NGI Commons selected highlights and a link to an insightful session: “Reclaiming the Stack: Co-creating a European Tech Stack with DC-EDIC”, we explored how open, interoperable, and collectively governed infrastructure can create long-term public value. Speakers from Zentrum Digitale Souveränität (ZenDiS), Direction interministérielle du numérique (DINUM), and Open Future Foundation highlighted the collaborative processes and governance mechanisms shaping DC-EDIC, Europe’s new Digital Commons initiative. 🔎 https://lnkd.in/e2wjskJV 📽 Watch the session here: https://lnkd.in/eP486xvT #FOSDEM2026 #DigitalCommons #OpenSource #PublicInfrastructure #DigitalSovereignty #NGICommons Open Future Foundation OpenForum Europe CNRS The Linux Foundation Martel Innovate NGI - The Next Generation Internet

Open Source and Internet Commons for Europe’s Digital Sovereignty
About us
The NGI Commons approach is built on a clear comprehension of the technological, research, socio-economic, legal and policy-related factors relevant to the NGI, and the planned activities have been conceived to generate value for all stakeholders within the NGI community, but also help facilitate access to NGI resources and funding to grow DC/IC initiatives. This value-generation driven approach is supported by an in-depth understanding and privileged access to NGI tools and mechanisms, as well as strong competencies and well-established connections across Europe and beyond brought by the consortium. By liaising with a number of bottom-up initiatives in the DC and OS scenes and engaging with top-down policy/regulatory efforts and experts, the ambition is to help NGI lead the way on Internet Commons as core building blocks of EU digital sovereignty.

Have you had a chance to complete the NGI Commons survey? Please check it out here!
🇪🇺 NGI Commons is launching a comprehensive survey on #DigitalCommons Building Blocks for the Open Internet Stack – and we need your expertise! 🔎 As the European Commission prepares to transition from the NGI - The Next Generation Internet to the #OpenInternetStack, this is your opportunity to influence how Europe builds sovereign, sustainable digital infrastructure. 🎯 Who should participate? ✓ Digital Commons practitioners and contributors ✓ Open source developers and maintainers ✓ Public sector implementers ✓ Policy advocates and researchers ✓ Anyone working in open technology ecosystems 📋 What we're asking about: Technical building blocks (cloud infrastructure, identity systems, communication protocols) Non-technical capabilities (governance models, funding mechanisms, community frameworks) Use cases, challenges, and success stories from the field The potential role of different stakeholders in the proposed Open Internet Stack Your feedback on the NGI Commons Building Blocks taxonomy ⏱️ Time commitment: 20-30 minutes Your responses will directly inform policy recommendations to DG-CNECT and shape the implementation of Europe's digital sovereignty strategy. The survey closes at the end of 2025. 🔉 NGI Commons met Mark Herringer during a workshop. He shared with us a strong message: “Commons, for me, is like a forest in the real world, which we all enjoy and want to walk through and listen to the birds…#DigitalCommons is a common good in a similar way to a forest. We want to look after it and make sure that others can use it after us—and that it gets better and better and stronger and stronger.” This is a powerful reminder that digital commons aren’t just infrastructure or policy—they’re shared spaces that require care, stewardship, and long-term thinking. 🇪🇺 If we want them to thrive, we have to treat them less like extractive resources and more like living ecosystems. What resonates with you in this analogy? NGI Commons is actively engaged on several fronts that contribute to the creation of a competitive European Open Source Ecosystem. Some insights from our Coordinator Dr Monique Calisti More to come on our channels! NGI - The Next Generation Internet EU Digital & Tech
#Sovereignty is Earned, Not Declared: 6 Pillars for a Competitive European Open Source Ecosystem - read the short article This past week in Brussels was a special one for me. It was my first trip after a hip transplant: a personal milestone that required patience, resilience, and a lot of "rebuilding." Coincidentally, the "Open Source Week" I attended felt very much the same. From the EU Open Source Policy Summit, to the Eu Open Source Awards, to #FOSDEM and the #SIMPL Day, the message was clear: Europe is moving past the "talking" phase of sovereignty. We are now in the much harder, more physical "building" phase. We are operationalising our strategic autonomy, and just like physical recovery, it requires steady, industrial-grade effort rather than just quick declarations. In my view, there are 6 main strategic pillars on how we can turn our technical excellence into a truly sovereign reality - read some more extended notes below and drop your comments! #OpenSource #FOSDEM #Sovereignty #Resilience #TechLeadership Martel Innovate SimpL FOSDEM NGI Commons NGI - The Next Generation Internet European Open Source Academy (EOSA) European Commission EU Digital & Tech OpenForum Europe

🔉 Today NGI Commons is very happy to attend the #EUOpenSourcePolicySummit26! 🇪🇺 Fabrizia Benini, Head of the Future Internet Unit within the Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology at the European Commission. She took part in a panel discussing the role of initiatives such as the #EUSovereignTechFund, the impact of key legislation including the DMA, AI Act, and CRA, and the importance of open governance, skills, and IT user capacity. Drawing comparisons with international strategies, the discussion explored whether Europe’s strength lies in its developers, companies, foundations — or all of them together. 🇪🇺 The conversation now continues with Manuel Mateo Goyet, focusing on the role of Open Source Programme Offices (OSPOs) as engines of institutional learning, collaboration, and governance, and on how a potential EU policy on OSPOs could accelerate this transformation. Using examples from critical sectors such as energy, transport, and public administration, the panel examines how organisational capacity can strengthen Europe’s digital resilience and enable openness at scale. Strong discussions, strong community — open source at the heart of Europe’s digital future. 👉 More information can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eP_CzxNW #NGICommons #EUOpenSourceWeek #OpenSource #EUCloudEdgeIoT #DigitalEurope Open Future Foundation OpenForum Europe Martel Innovate CNRS The Linux Foundation NGI - The Next Generation Internet

AN IMPORTANT REMINDER!
Great conversations and a lot of passion sparking @ Open Source Policy Summit by OpenForum Europe Rethinking about the key words from this morning - #community #competitiveness #choice #contribution #sovereignty - it seems we have a lot of food for fhought for the next Strategy. Especially clear the message on the need for bridges and roads, not only the skyscrapers. But, there is perhaps more to say, and ⏰is ticking, you have until Tuesday to participate to the call for Evidence! https://lnkd.in/eQC24VT8

🇪🇺 Today Dr Monique Calisti was at the Simpl Annual Community Event 2026 in Brussels. A great opportunity to dive deeper into the practical realities of Europe’s data space infrastructure and explore key questions, including: 📌 How do existing data space initiatives integrate with Simpl-Open? 📌 What incentives encourage organisations engage with and adopt Simpl? 📌 Where does technical #interoperability end and governance alignment begin? 📌 How is #Simpl different from other EU-funded open source and open data interoperable middleware platforms? #EC_Simpl #DataSpaces #EUDataStrategy Thibaut Kleiner Dr Monique Calisti 🫵 Stay tuned for more inspiring takeaways straight from the #EUOpenSourceWeek.
