Hospitals are some of the most important public places in our lives, yet we rarely think about how they’re designed until we find ourselves in one. Whether you're there for a routine appointment, supporting a loved one, or going through something more serious, the environment around you matters. The light, the air, the noise levels, even how easily you can find your way - all of these small details influence how we experience care. Through projects like the New Tweed Valley Hospital, the Frankston Hospital Redevelopment and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Redevelopment, we’re exploring how architecture and interior design can quietly but meaningfully contribute to better care experiences - for patients, staff, and communities alike. Merivale Street Hotel | The hotel’s architecture and interior design draws directly from its South Brisbane precinct. “Materiality is inspired by Brisbane Tuff, a local volcanic rock found uniquely on Brisbane’s cliffs and in some of Brisbane's oldest buildings. Its form takes cue from the Queensland Art Gallery's elegant postmodernism. The rectilinear façade and articulated massing make for a striking expression. The Design Inn Symposium is Asia-Pacific’s leading hotel architecture and interior design conference. This year, Bates Smart’s Brenton Smith (Director) and Amelia Donald (Associate Director) are taking the stage alongside design leaders and hospitality heavyweights. Our design for 18 MacGregor Street in Mount Gravatt, Brisbane, has been granted approval. We designed a mixed-use building that’s distinctly of its environment. The architecture draws from the native hoop pine trees endemic to the area. The tower’s petal-like floorplates evoke the geometry of the native Tea Tree flower. Its façade is inspired by traditional echidna quill necklaces associated with the pre-colonial history of Mount Gravatt. The apartments, childcare centre and public spaces provide excellent amenity – each space tailored for natural light, shade, shelter, outlook, refuge and connection to nature. Salter Brothers
