You're handling sensitive data remotely. How do you reassure clients about data privacy?
I’d make sure clients feel confident about data privacy by following the key relevant mandates of UAE PDPL (Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021): Be upfront & transparent – I’d explain how their data is used, stored, and protected (Article 13). Use strong security – Encrypt data, limit access, and ensure compliance with UAE security standards (UAE IAS and Article 20). Respect client rights – Allow them to access, update, or delete their data easily (Articles 14-15). Plan for the worst – In case of a breach, I’d notify them and authorities as required (Article 9). It’s about trust—handling data responsibly and legally.

What are the main challenges and risks of managing mission-critical applications?
Data privacy is now a major concern with tighter regulations on sensitive customer, financial, employee data. Centralizing business apps across regions/countries adds complexity in navigating varying data privacy laws. Example: Our ERP centralization program consolidating systems across GCC business units was a challenge, as the Central ERP would house protected data subject to different legislative mandates. We had to ddress data privacy in design stage to account for: -Data residency requirements -Localization needs -Access control policies To avoid significant compliance challenges post-implementation and to ensure data movement across borders was contained.

What are the most effective ways to incorporate data privacy culture into your decision-making processes?
Knowing where you are before you begin your journey towards compliance with data privacy laws is the starting point. A basic self assessment with respect to GDPR / UAE PDPL could be a good start. It will show you the gaps you need to work on. A supportive policy that sets key data privacy mandates for the organization , supported and signed by the top level executives could be a good win for the early phase of your journey that would set you up for success. The journey itself is long and arduous, since most of the organizations will likely have to start from data discovery and data labelling. But then there are ways you can fast track it and make it less painful. You will likely have to depend on external help to facilitate that.
