Could the UAE’s engineered coastlines be designed to support more marine life?   We’re pleased to welcome John A. Burt, Professor of Biology and Co-director of the Mubadala Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences at New York University Abu Dhabi, to Frontier25’s non-resident fellowship for climate thought leadership.   In his first article, John A. Burt looks at the role of seawalls, breakwaters, ports, and reclaimed islands in the marine ecosystem across the Arabian Gulf.   Over time, these structures have become habitats for diverse aquatic life, although they cannot replace natural environments such as mangroves, seagrass meadows, oyster beds, or coral reefs.   Where coastal infrastructure already exists, can it be managed in ways that do less harm and create better conditions for marine life to take hold? Her Highness Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of Frontier25 and The Climate Tribe, joined Lindsay Hooper, CEO of the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, for a fireside chat at Robinson College, Cambridge, University of Cambridge. Speaking about meaningful climate leadership, Her Highness highlighted the importance of scaling existing solutions, removing barriers to innovation, and embedding sustainability into organisations beyond checklists. How can the construction sector reduce waste before it is even created? This was the focus of the Abu Dhabi Infrastructure Summit panel moderated by Frontier25’s Nour T. Mezher, Senior Manager, Strategy & Programmes, on circular economy in infrastructure and construction. With insights from Cemex UAE, Holcim UAE and SJ Group, the discussion looked at how circularity can become part of the way projects are planned, built and managed, from the materials chosen at the start to what happens to them later. For infrastructure and construction, this shift is not only about reducing environmental impact. It is also about building more efficiently, using fewer resources, and creating long-term value.
