National Infrastructure Assessment

The first National Infrastructure Assessment (NIA) was released by the Canadian Infrastructure Council on November 27, 2025.

ACEC has been championing the need for a data-driven, long-term infrastructure strategy for years and was one of the key stakeholders at the table as the Council worked to deliver this first report.

This NIA has the potential to be an important foundation to guide federal infrastructure policies and programs. At a time when the government is focusing on building more homes, the report highlights the importance of building housing-enabling infrastructure in tandem, such as roads and water treatment facilities.

The report also recommends making better use of existing systems, strengthening coordination across sectors, and planning for the future with a focus on data and resilience.

These are sound and timely recommendations to address the infrastructure challenges of many Canadian communities.

We look forward to continuing to work with the CIC as it gathers data and input for subsequent reports, which we anticipate will have more detail and address additional infrastructure assets that are vital for Canada’s growth and prosperity.
