For those concerned with battery, I obtained this phone used after losing my only phone. Before this it was merely a WhatsApp phone, likely bought in either 2021 or 2023, I installed AccuBattery and have managed to keep my phone turned on for most of the time. The first 5 averages say I had a 74% health, shortly after it dropped to 69% and it stabilized around that mark for 2 months. Then it began to recover, a 81% bump, 82%, 85%, it wasn't misreporting either! It really felt new! That was the case for 3 months, then I found out that Samsung "Protect Battery" is a feature and turned it on, then it dipped, and it dipped hard, 62% health, the average dropped down to 66%, it has since recovered back to 75% but I think this battery is practically toast.

AccuBattery reports battery health by measuring battery current, temperature, voltage, and average battery usage (%/h). It is not the BMC misrepresenting health, but a reflection of how the phone performed in that cycle.

The looks did age well, all thanks to phones being stagnant since 2017.

This was once was my main phone. Lags like hell. Not kidding. Even after a reset following my switch, it still felt unfluid. I lived with it anyway, because I was used to it. In case you're curious, I, then, decided to install Hyperion Launcher and following that, Lawnchair, using Nothing-style icon packs.

A year after I stopped using it as main phone (it still served as my secondary phone) I decided to install custom software, for the first time. Credits to X-ROM and LongUi developers (latter is EOL) for the One UI 6.1 ports, with the added bonus of One UI 7 from X-ROM.

It felt much more fluid. Still somewhat laggy, but for a very old midrange phone, it was good. Not sure why; these are S23 FE (X-ROM) and S22 (LongUi) ports respectively, made for flagship phones. Maybe developer-made optimisation?

Then I switched to AOSP-based ports l first found on XDA. To be specific, Infinity X first (no lock screen shortcut customisation), Evolution X (fingerprint sensor didn't work intermittently at the software level; Google search bar was there and i didn't like it), AxionAOSP (that sucked the most; phone constantly froze), then VoltageOS (a couple of features weren't working but not a dealbreaker). They felt even more fluid. Noticeably more, despite the slow chipset. Opening animations still lagged, but not buffered, and that's good especially considering the heavy blur animations the softwares had.

Credits to these for building the amazing universal ROMs: https://t.me/ExyROMs

Now, I'm using CrDroid 12.5, the official release of it. I am writing this post to show you how software can really make a phone feel that laggy; One UI was bloated as hell, and funnily installing a port which wasn't even unbloated at all helped make it less laggy. Very suspicious of Samsung, isn't it? Samsung A51's processor was slow, but the software really amplified its sluggardly performance.

Not only are you blowing away money you're directly a cause to the problem of over consumption.

I’ve been using the Samsung A51 since 27 February 2021, and it has held up far better than I expected from a mid-range phone released several years ago. Despite daily use across productivity, social media, and communication apps, it still performs at a tolerable and stable level.
I regularly use a wide mix of apps such as MS Teams, Microsoft Authenticator, Outlook, OneDrive, Copilot M365, Chrome, Gmail, Google Docs, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Messenger, Telegram, WhatsApp (including heavy messaging, audio notes, and image sharing), Google Maps, Wallet, banking apps, taxi apps, notes, weather/clock widgets, VSCO, Shazam, CamScanner, Google Lens, cloud storage apps (Yandex Disk, Google Drive), News apps such as Business Insider, McKinsey, BBC, light gaming apps such as Sudoku, chess.
For a phone from 2020, it still handles this workload surprisingly well. There are occasional freezes when unlocking, but fortunately these are infrequent and temporary.
Battery endurance is aging but usable. If I start my day at 10:00 with 100%, I typically return home after an 8-hour workday with around 31% remaining. Not impressive by today’s standards, but acceptable for a 4+-year-old device.

The A51 has proven to be a reliable long-term companion, especially considering the number of apps and tasks I run daily. I hope to use it at least until the end of this year, and based on its current condition, that feels realistic.
