By this point governments should just FORCE out blueprints, schematics and everything into the public and destroy any hoarding of information so more companies could build these things.

Higher prices give the competition more room to catch up.

Just trying to look at the good side of things.

Those fabs being constructed shouldn't be affected by the manufacturing cost the manipulation of TSMC is crazy like China Huawei.

those fabs are supported by the chips act United States Act by Biden. They also saves a lot of time and money therefore they will earn more money after it's constructed like the after covid prices didn't go down afterwards. 10% is alot plus more fabs being made in the US alone.

rizki1, 22 Jul 2026Greed is the primary reason.Nearly all companies want to keep the same profit margin. So if costs go up, prices rise to keep the profit margin close to the same level. Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, Vivo and Honor have all increased their prices to restore profit margins. Only Apple and Huawei haven't on their phones so far but Apple has started a price increase on some of their other products and they'll have to substantially rise prices on next gen phones to maintain their 20-30% profit margin. The other choice smartphone companies can make is just to drastically cut specs and realise rubbish phones. Xiaomi chose that option with the Redmi note 17 pro in China. The worst Redmi pro phone every released with downgraded storage options, really weak processor, and an abysmal budget entry level camera setup. That's basically the same thing as a phone with specs like a budget phone is now being sold for the price of a midranger. TSMC can't really make downgrades or cut costs like smartphone companies so it's inevitable that they would increase prices when costs are going up. The prices of next Gen phones will be really high. This will paticularly hit midrangers and these gaming focused phones with flagship processors as they were typically better value phones but now they will go into a completely different pricing category unless companies make big downgrades like in the Redmi note 17 pro China version

TSMC: Making HBM for AI data centre is more profitable so we need to increase chipset price to match that profit.

The worst part is that chip manufacturers will likely reuse existing older chips to meet demand in the budget segment.

So, welcome back another rehash of Helio G99.

At this point, with the ongoing RAMpocalypse, it shouldn't come as a surprise. Until the whole AI bubble has burst for good, we won't be seeing any price decrease in foreseeable future.

10% rise isn't so bad considering that memory prices have tripled.

I'm so glad that I bought a new phone before the price hike.

I as a consumer have never seen need for anything below 7nm process. The gains are very small and only serve as bragging rights. Yes 5nm and 3nm might be better on paper but reality is I don't see any real benefits. Battery technology improvement have negated any gains.

Soon, the power to boycott will go away as the corporations are slowly pulling away from consumer markets and rely on enterprises or each other to survive.

erotavlas, 21 Jul 2026except end consumers aren't the only buyers of new tech unfortunatelySure, but if consumers stop buying new tech and products and sales drop for just 10% that is the problem for chip manufacturers cos then need to stock old or current chips or other manufacturers that has new products that they didn't sell cos no one buyint, they need to stock up but new products is coming out soon. And they will be forced to lower price to sell old stocks and if not then new chip ordes will be less cos they didn't sell current products, and chip manufacturers will be forced to lower the price to sell current stock so they csn get new chips and new orders. WE as end users will get 30-40% or more discount so they can sell old/new products that was in stock pilling up. So if we don't buy they can't sell, so it stays and if they want to sell they need to discount products. Yes some of those goes to new AI c*ap but that won't last for ever (maybe two+ years) and WE users that buy always new tech are more important than AI c*ap, and without us they are doomed... They need people still cos we are the buyers and not AI for appliances, cars, phones, tv, etc. Without us, even AI will collapse.
