The price gouging manufacturers do scream "I want to kill this product line despite being the future of phones because I love the margins I make on the design I have made an expertise on".
Same reason why german car manufacturers never tried to get on with time. It's called corporate resting in the laurels and it is experienced by the lay public as a long plateau.
Take a basic car from 1980s and early '00s. Basically the same thing, only the high end was suoermemly upgrade, but most people were getting the same car for 20-30 years.
Which is vendors' nirvana and imo what they try to do with phones. Beat out the customer's need for innovation and accustomed them to the same old same old.

If I wanted an older phone from before 2015 Id get one; most likely something such as the Galaxy Beam. I'm simply saying you can pay $200 for a fully functioning Foldable rather than $6-700 used. And certainly much cheaper than a brand new Fold 7 or 8. I'm a deal seeker. The newest or highest end devices I can get for the cheapest prices in today's economy are truer feats than the $10 old phones you can get in literal Bundles for like $100 for 10 of em nowadays. Older phones are cool don't get me wrong; but I'm thinking of practical devices I can switch to if one of them breaks. Unfortunately older ones than 2015 aren't nearly as realistically reliable for 2026 modern use.
S4 isn't even really relatable either. If Samsung had made a foldable back in the early 2010's I'd consider that being relatable but the S series phones are boring and meh. Especially nowadays it's the same old factor with the same old basic features besides better camera battery and processor. SOMETIMES the next line will come with a new feature or two. Samsung is the type of company to make a feature that's half baked but works enough for daily use and put it on their phones before they perfect it and make it mainstream on all new models. After using a Fold 4 everyday I can say I would never go back to a normal single display phone if I didn't have to. And I don't have to go back to single display cell phones thanks to amazing sellers on sites such as Ebay selling top tier devices at very affordable prices.
You also have to think about the fact that if you get a cheap enough flagship or top tier device in good enough condition it can in turn be sold for a good chunk more. Id never sell my Foldables. But, for example, if someone buys a $250 Fold 5 with minimal cosmetic defects or screen blemishes; it can easily be resold for $4-500 to the right buyer and it would be possibly cheaper to fix those problems before listing it back for sale again.

What's crazy is I got 3 foldables (Fold 4; 5 and 6) for under $800 all together. You can find minimally damaged Foldables by Samsung from sellers on ebay for as low as $150; although those ones have the worst problems. If you get lucky like I did you may be able to snag a Fold 3 4 5 or 6 for no more than $250; although even the ones I have show very minor display issues such as small dead circles on the inner or cover display (typically half circles as they are at the sides of the displays but they don't hinder usage at all); or color lines; such as my Fold 5 has (It's a very thin pink color line on the inner display; no hindering to it's usage either). My fold 6 has the largest issue with the inner left top display sometimes flickering whenever complete black is shown in that area of the display (It cuts in and out from time to time on how frequently it happens). To be fair I paid around $240 for the 6 but besides that both screens are fully usable and the entire device is fully functional; all 3 of my folds are. It's still probably cheaper to have a minimally damaged foldable and take it in to get the displays fixed.
This is just to say that if you want a foldable experience at a REALLY good price and don't mind a few cosmetic blemishes or minor screen defects; you can pay a very reasonable price and get such an experience. I will add all older foldables up to the 6 have Spen support as well. Honestly it's a no brainer deal; it saves on ewaste too; if you're willing to spend the $2-400 for one. Fold 8 is nice but I don't care for all these nearly 2k prices companies like Motorola; Samsung; and even Apple are charging/going to charge for their top tier foldables. Fold 6 is still very reasonable in 2026; and I main my fold 4 everyday, Battery is excellent; even used. I have no problems with them except I'm waiting for Android 16 One UI 8.5 on my 4 and Android 17 One UI 9 on my 6. I recommend the Poetic Cases with SPen holder for the Fold 4 from Ebay and you can find a $40 Official Galaxy Fold Edition SPen on eBay was well.

The price going up is bold! That means the depreciation will be even more when you sell it. Foldable resale value is much worse than regular phones and a price increase makes it even more expensive so you are worse of both ways.
