ABetaInfo reports that the "Contact info" screen, opened by tapping a contact's photo, is the only place the green dot is displayed for now. In our opinion, it would have been more useful if WhatsApp displayed it in the chats list and Chats tab.
100% correct. Otherwise there is no use of it.

The fact that a simple activity indicator needs you to install a beta version is crazy, this is the kinda stuff you'd expect to be added in a weekly patch or something

Luckily you can hide it, I have online and last seen off, sadly many of my family members are of the type "why didn't you react?! You were online that moment!".
Same with read messages, had to turn that off for same reason.
Wish I could ignore some of my family but oh well... (complains about culture and stuff)

We can bash companies for stealing and selling our data but I bet if they would add option to share location and bank account that normally is off, some people would turn it on just so they would show others their location and money...
