I own an Xbox Ally X (7" LCD Z2E), model year 2025.
The price is already simply exorbitant for the "base" model (Z2A, aka: Zen2 Quadcore "Van Gogh" - structurally the same 2022 hardware as a Steam Deck that was recently "offered" for a thousand dollars.)
This forced perceptual effect tied to the "anniversary" is just a placebo (10-20-30-40, etc., the imagination knows no bounds) to hide the further price increase (which will be significant). Hence the "glasses package that no one asked for and that no one wants."
Now the fundamental question:
- How much will the screen alone impact the final price of the Ally X with AMD Z2 Extreme APU?
The only "upgrade" that would make sense on a device like this ("anniversary" or not "anniversary")
I remind you and myself:
- APUs (be they AMD, Nvidia, Intel, etc., it doesn't matter) provide the impression of basic hardware, offered at "NASA" prices.
For comparison, just look at the prices of the latest laptops from various manufacturers (Asus, MSI, Acer, etc.), offered at "workstation" prices. (We're talking about everyday users, not professionals.)
- The cost per APU is almost half the total production cost of the product, which will then be sold on the market.
- The rest is due to corporate "speculation and fraud." ("It's this guy's fault, it's that guy's fault," a now-established communication strategy, a systematic neglect of responsibility.)
"I produce with x and sell to y, but I'm careful not to let y know I'm stealing their time."
Meanwhile, I invent the worst commercial atrocities to justify my "image" in the eyes of the public (despite being aware of the enormous social and economic gravity of the current situation, in which I am also complicit, "but of which I simply don't care; on the contrary, I keep producing as if there were no tomorrow."
This would seem like a rather difficult argument to refute, were it not for the fact that the justification is purely economic (i.e., the constant duality between "possession and accumulation") and has nothing to do with human beings.
It has to do with human beings. With nature, but not in its entirety. With human nature, but only in a certain kind of human nature.

If you only want this device, you can wait for a standalone release. It's most likely that ASUS will make it available as a standalone unit later.

Valve raised the Steam Deck OLED prices by $240 to $300. Valve totally can't control its outrageous price increases.
The GPU performance of the Steam Deck is 1.6 TFLOPS. The Nintendo Switch 2's GPU performance is about 3.07 TFLOPS. The Nintendo Switch 2 blows the Steam Deck out of the water in terms of GPU performance. Also, the Nintendo Switch 2 supports DLSS.
It's funny that it's 2026, but some people still don't know that the Nintendo Switch 2 is much more powerful than the Steam Deck.

How can one ridicule someone for cost increases beyond their control? is it now a poorer value to purchase? yes, Valve is not a charity it is a business.

GSMArena ridiculed Valve because it's outrageous to increase the prices of a device that is much less powerful than the Nintendo Switch 2 by $240 to $300. GSMArena didn't ridicule ASUS for announcing this device because there is nothing outrageous about it. I don't see what is hard to understand about it.

On the other hand, there is nothing outrageous about this device yet as the price hasn't been revealed. So I don't see your point. Even if it is about $2,000, it's to be expected, as according to GSMArena, the glasses alone are $850.

While it doesn't say anything about the price for Xbox Ally X20 on its own, I love the idea of AR glasses bundle. AR glasses is definitely the right way for a mobile huge screen.

The steam deck article was written "unprofessionally".
Made it sound like the author is bitter about the $300 price increase.
But when this article shows up (Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20) it was written with "professionalism".
The unit has no price tag yet, but definitely expensive, and comes in a bundle.
Not a stand alone unit.

And that is after GSM Arena's article was dunking on Steam Deck for increasing the price of their Steam Deck by $300 (making it $1,000 for the OLED version).

Note: I will praise the ASUS hardware, but not the Microslop software.
