I have both a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and a Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Guess which one is my main phone.
Hint, I love my 2 TB microSD card.

DarlingYext, 25 May 2026"If you're happy with accepting whatever BS the phone manufacturers serve and overch... moreYou are right.
Xperia doesnt follow the same set of rules that phone lovers.. well.. love.

I know you follow the simple rule of looking just for the hardware/price value.
I mean fair enough. But are phones just that?

Everyone can read the specs, but that's not like we buy desktop pc just looking at the components.
Phones have flavors because of the software features. And sometimes in Xperia case hardware features that arr missing on other flagships these days, like front stereo speakers, easy swaping SD memory card for DSLR camera, 3.5mm jack for use of a microphone or wired headphones for content creators. It has many things, but do they matter to most of mainstream? No. So why beating a dead horse. Anyway..

Every phone brand Chinese or not Chinese has something good to offer so does the Xperia.
It seems you are here to talk about only negative sides.
I mean here, on this site.

Because many people can buy 3-4 Chinese flagship phones from Shentzen site for the price of the crazy expensive Xperia, it makes sense why people never tried it. And it makes sense why Chinese flagships have a great reputation around here.
But how many of you bought it for official EU site, since you are mostly located in EU. Not many right?

i am a little surprised that everyone here can put a little time to read why can't Xperia be more in line with pricing today, but still choosing not to. Interesting.

But why wouldn't you try it? I mean Xperia flagship. It doesn't have to be the newest model.
Or any other phone that is not Chinese one.

If you are a phone lover, wouldn't be fair to "feel" how are the others and then make a statement for the readers? Anyway...

My question to you is: do you think your comments are objective or subjective?
    Thank you

We have our own different preferences and views on some things, and that is fine. Let's agree to disagree.

DarlingYext, 29 May 2026"I don't see how can a few mm in height matter other than for a rare too short pocke... moreYou're kind of oversimplifying it there... Just making better devices isn't enough for anything. Apple and Samsung's domination isn't the result of their devices being better than the competition, but years and years of investing in marketing on all possible fronts.

For anything to really change, people first need to know of alternatives. For most phone buyers in the US and EU, that also means those devices should be available with carriers. For them to be available with carriers, it needs to make financial sense for the carriers. The carriers obviously spare money by providing as little choice as possible, just enough to make sure the average person doesn't go to a different one because of device choice. And for the average person to do that, they first need to know of alternatives, which they don't because the alternatives aren't available with their carrier and/or the manufacturer doesn't have unlimited marketing budget like Apple and Samsung do. Which they can't have because they can't sell all that much.

It's a vicious circle which has the least to do with whether or not the alternatives are better than other alternatives or not and very little with whether or not the alternatives are better than devices/phones from the main competition of Apple and Samsung. Undercutting with price is also difficult for anyone because of economies of scale etc. It's simply another case of the rich getting richer and the rest fighting for scraps so imo it's quite unrealistic to hope for much more than what we have.

It's not about pocket size, as I've already explained in my other comment, it's about display size, some prefer larger displays, some like smaller ones more, some want wider, or narrower displays.

"Honor, Oppo don't exist in the US, or in Europe much... ๐Ÿค” But good luck with that, to you, Sony, all the manufacturers! ๐Ÿ‘"

Honor very much does exist in Europe, and so does Oppo, both are way larger here than Sony (which practically doesn't exist, even though it used to be on sale everywhere), but way smaller than Xiaomi, Samsung and Apple. As for the US, neither Honor, nor Oppo exist there, so Sony could easily become a bigger player there. Sony has to change, but that doesn't mean they have to become generic, or another "safe choice", they just need to offer certain features that the competition offers. The competition isn't Samsung, or Apple, but all the alternatives to those, that offer larger batteries with fast charging, and larger/smaller higher resolution displays, but don't offer a micro SD card slot, or a headphone jack, which Sony could so easily solve by including all of them. That might even get the attention of people that don't already want a micro SD slot or a headphone jack, but switching to a Sony might just make those people want to use those two features, and then their next phone will also become a Sony.

I'm realistic and know that that won't ever happen and that all of this extreme nitpicking and bashing people are doing with alternative brands leads to only one thing, which is less sales for any of them meaning less chance of a "better" phone or any phone next year as the casual visitor will just go back to the default of Apple and Samsung as the "safe choice" further strengthening their duopoly.

It's there when you need it. That's how they're comparable as far as convenience goes. I could use my phone for a lot of things but also don't when there's superior devices. I could use the car to get to work every day but don't when the public transport in a city is the superior option. Both are good backups. Services, navigation, banking, communication... Everything the same for 20 years now, and equally doable on a 100 โ‚ฌ smartphone so I've no idea where you're going here. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

                https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nYearMin=2005&nYearMax=2006&chk35mm=selected

A few years later all phones had a 3,5 mm jack.
The concept of listening to Bluetooth Audio or using headphones connected to the charging/data port came first and (smart)phones with a 3,5 mm jack are hence more modern. It's a simple fact, like it or not. And was the standard for years, as is logical given that all good headphones were and are still being sold with a 3,5 mm TR(R)S connector. Until the manufacturers figured out that they can sell the extreme anti-consumer move of its removal as "modern" to the ignorant to make them waste hundreds and thousands over years on mediocre headphones which can't do as much as play a lossless 44,1/16 Audio CD stream, 20 years after A2DP became common. Another disgrace for "tech development" of the 10's and 20's.

It's similar with the card slots. I (and everybody else) was thinking about how much storage my phone had in ~2004 and how many songs it can fit, I didn't any more in 2006 and for many years after that. Till a similar anti-consumer move came.

"It is that recurring issues reported consistently across multiple devices and generations tend to get written off as hater noise rather than taken seriously"

Please provide data, i.e. statistics about it and comparisons to other manufacturers. I'm not into typical forum nonsense of biased people trying to make anectodal evidence that fit their story into more than it is. The only thing I can reply to it is my own anectodal evidence which equally has about zero weight.
And even if you had proper data, I have no way of knowing if QC at any company has changed in one or the other direction from the previous generation of phone or components etc. etc. It means very, very little.

"you own multiple Sony devices across years, defend every criticism of them and attribute all negative reports to haters who have "never seen a Sony anyway." That is a fine position to hold, but calling it brand-neutral is not credible."

A Sony Ericsson T300 25 years ago, as it was one of the first phones with a camera, a Sony Ericsson K800 20 years ago, as it had one of the best cameras with features missing from "modern" "cameraphones", and a Sony Xperia 1 III. Loads and loads of Sony devices. ๐Ÿคฃ I just hate BS and there's lots of BS coming from people hating on Sony for whatever reason.
I didn't even want a Sony in 2021. Had to replace the best phone in the history of mankind aka BlackBerry Priv and looked around for a semi-decent phone that doesn't lack significant modern features or would come with a defective screen with a huge patch of dead pixels out the factory. Clicked on the Phone Finder, 3,5 mm jack, microSD slot, notch: no, the Xperias came up as the only option. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

"FHD on a 2026 flagship" - already discussed, the whole industry is a disgrace

"240Hz PWM with no DC dimming" - got no issue with that, I'm not sensitive to flickering and whatever ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

"5000mAh and 30W charging while competitors ship 7000mAh+ with 80-120W" - which is mostly spec sheet comparison forum BS, sorry. Xperia outperforms an X300 Pro by 40 % in battery life, despite the latter having 10 % more capacity. Significantly outperforms the X300 Ultra despite that one having 32 % more battery capacity. Charges as fast as the X9 Pro despite that one claiming 80 W charging. So... Not as relevant in real life as it seems from the spec sheets, Xperia isn't the top performer but also not in any way bad. Once again, the whole industry here is one big disappointment. I had a 5000 mAh 5" phone in 2014, not one of the rugged huge ones but a normal 8,something mm thick THL 5000. I've no idea why tech isn't progressing in any relevant way for the past 10-15 years.

"thick bezels" - that's just nonsense. I'm looking at the screen, not below and over it. If anything, it helps for the much more relevant in life possibility of decent front-facing speakers and proper stereo sound, not speakers pointed wher ever

"no Dolby Vision and no HDR10+ certification" - right, someone will see the difference between HDR10 and DV on a tiny 6-7" screen. Not even on a 65" OLED would anyone know what kind of HDR they're watching. The only thing a DV certification gets one is bragging rights that they're making Dolby richer for no use whatsoever. ๐Ÿคญ

"smaller camera sensors than competitors at the same price" - still makes photos in no way worse than the competition ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

"two major Android updates until competitive pressure forced a change" - absolutely an advantage, I'd like them to have no updates at all. Android hasn't progressed in 10 years really and all a newer OS version can get one these days is new bugs and worse performance. No app I use requires anywhere near the 13 I'm on.

I'd like some of what you're smoking, mate. ๐Ÿป Of course Sony won't succeed, nobody can. Apple and Samsung are the main players, people buy those more the less effort they make (see the market shares in the past couple of years) and we all know what happened to Huawei the moment it seemed like they might become a serious contender.
Plus, nobody (as in the average buyers) wants different, even if the different is much better, so the only way other players can get a bit more of a market share is by being same as those two. In which case I'll obviously have no interest about them so... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Or they can cover some niches.

That's why I think you completely misunderstand that the Xperia has its own specific features, which are for people who know how to use them. For example, the Xperia 1V was the only phone on the market that could capture "useful" parallax effect in 4K video with a telephoto lens without using a gimbal. If you'd like more details, I'll explain them to you when I have a moment.

Modern is defined by where the industry actually stands, and Sony checks none of the boxes: FHD on a 2026 flagship, 240Hz PWM with no DC dimming, 5000mAh and 30W charging while competitors ship 7000mAh+ with 80-120W, thick bezels, no Dolby Vision and no HDR10+ certification, smaller camera sensors than competitors at the same price, two major Android updates until competitive pressure forced a change. Your personal preference for this feature set is fine, but it is not the same as the phone being modern.

Another thing is that display size isn't a concern only because it needs to fit into your pockets, it's also a question of preference, just because someone can fit a huge near 7" smartphone in their pockets doesn't mean they want such a large phone, the same way that even if someone can't fit a huge phone their pockets they may still want such a device.

I want Sony smartphones to succeed, and I get it, you don't personally care how many people buy and enjoy Xperia phones, but with the Xperia 5 series already gone and the 1, 10 series still not selling very well, I'd want Sony to change a thing or two, and I definitely don't mean that they should remove the SD card slot, the headphone jack, or anything else, but something has to change.

You're nitpicking and making things up again, sorry.
Xiaomi 17T, Honor 600 (Pro) directly on the front page. Both slightly wider too. Pixel 9a, 10a. Oppo Find X9. vivo V70. Motorola Edge 60, Edge 70, G86, G96. Honor Magic8 Pro... All within +/-1 mm width and equally or up to a couple mm shorter, which doesn't matter in real life anyway since we use phones 99 % in the portrait orientation and pockets where one would fit but a 2-3 mm taller one wouldn't are very, very rare.

"downgraded and is using a cheaper panel now, but their phones only got more expensive"

Just like the whole industry. We should either criticise all of them for BS'ing us and cutting costs everywhere while significantly increasing prices or none at all. It's a disgrace that there is literally zero new phones with the ppi of the Priv I had a damn decade ago and the display was far from being the USP of that device.
I'm not defending the reduction in screen resolution and I wholly disagreed with it when the 1 VI came, but I also am not going to criticise only one manufacturer for it while other have done the same and also removed far more useful features from all of their devices.

Nothing compact about the S26. Quite the contrary, my 1 III feels far more compact and more secure in hand than an S23 and S26 isn't far off; supposedly it's because of less rounded corners.
Last devices that could be called compact were the iPhone mini and Xperia 5 and 10 while it was still 21:9. Every phone on the current market requires use of both hands for the simple task of typing a message for the vast majority of world's population (remember, there's also small women out there that would also make use of the ability of typing with one hand while holding their baby in the other, for example. Didn't make that up, read a post from someone in that situation on reddit when I was last arguing about this silly topic with someone here) and hence has no basis to be called "compact" on.
So phones nowadays basically come in uncomfortably large, uncomfortably extra large and uncomfortably extra extra large, that's why I can't really be bothered by nitpicking the topic and +/- 2 mm any way... Whatever. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

User935, 28 May 2026The concept of small and large phone nowadays is ridiculous anyway. Plenty of phones the size ... more"The smartphone market is really in a very bad state if we're discussing 0,1" differences as a relevant factor as to why one phone is terrible and another wonderful."

I'm not saying you are right or wrong, but when the market is so incredibly saturated and you can pick and choose whatever you want, size also becomes a very important factor. Look, I want Xperia to succeed, and I know they could. There might be plenty of fairly compact (~6.3") and huge (6.7-6.9") smartphone, but there is practically 0 out of those that also has a micro SD card slot and a headphone jack, Sony could so easily step in and offer a compact and a huge phone with said 2 features and maybe capture the heart of more people. Contrary to what you think I'm not hating on Xperia for offering these two unique features, I'm just saying that that's not enough for most people.

"The concept of small and large phone nowadays is ridiculous anyway. Plenty of phones the size of Xperia which don't get bashed for their size."

Maybe for you the "concept" of small and large smartphones is ridiculous, but you can't keep denying that Xperia 1 series of phones are neither small, nor large. Although you even tried to claim that there are plenty of phones the size of Xperia 1, when that isn't true, yeah the iPhone Air has the same screen size, but said phone is significantly shorter, thus more compact. Every other phone either has a larger, than 6.5 display, or a smaller one, some have 6.59 displays but in a smaller body, so not sure where those plenty of other phones are, to my knowledge they don't exist.

"We had big phones in the 90's, we had some very small phones in the 00's, we had Apple ridiculing competition with ads about how their phones are made so that the thumb can reach all corners.."

Cool, smartphones have changed, their functionality has changed, and the whole front of the phone is a display now, so the size isn't wasted.

"Whatever. I myself used phones of very differing sizes and got used to any of it within a couple days."

Amazing, that's you, not most other people. I don't want to get used to something, I want to buy what I actually like, I have an iPhone Air, bought it to try it out, but I ended up hating the size (too small for me) and the OS, thankfully there are other options on the market so I didn't have to get used to it.

"The Galaxy S also went from 600 to 400 ppi, nobody ever says a word about that."

Yeah I personally wasn't exactly praising them, and I'm still very much not exactly a big fan the base Galaxy S series.

"And it's not like other 1200 โ‚ฌ phones have 600 ppi, same priced X300 Pro and X9 Pro are also only at 450 ppi.."

Sure, but 430-450ppi is still more than 396ppi and both are far less, than 643ppi that the Xperia 1 V had for example, whether that was necessary or not is besides the point, Sony downgraded and is using a cheaper panel now, but their phones only got more expensive, they could've and should've found the perfect middle ground, which is 1220p or 1440p resolution.

"Guess the "one size fits all" is horrible when it comes to Xperia coming in just one size (although other phones do too).."

Like what? Galaxy S26 exists as a compact phone, the S26+ is large, iPhone 17 Pro is compact while the 17 Pro Max is huge, Xiaomi 17 series, vivo X300 series and Oppo Find X9 series both include compact and huge devices, sure they aren't identical but they all offer roughly the same feature set, which Sony could easily match with only 2 phones, one compack, one large, plus include the headphone jack and SD card slot. Sony used to be the king of compact phones, and making a large one isn't exactly hard work anyways.

Wasn't much of an argument, just stated an obvious fact.

"a Porsche 911 is not practical, it's an unnecessary luxury for rich people to show off. Again, even a decent car would be parked 99.9% of time collecting dust, so not practical enough IMO."

I was obviously talking about cars in general, not the 911. The fact that a car is parked in my garage 99,9 % of time is what's practical about it. It's there to get me to work when the S-Bahn has a disruption, it's there when I need to go to the nearest emergency pharmacy on a Sunday, it's there if I spontaneously need to go to my parents several hundreds of km away.
Just like the smartphone is practical because I don't need to go to my computer to answer a simple e-mail with yes or no, I don't need to have my camera on me for a quick couple of photos if I get in a car accident or if I just need to send a photo of the cheese I'd like my wife to buy on her way home. Or I quickly pop my headphones in to hear someone's audio or video recording or some music. Or I want a bunch of music, photos, videos saved on my huge and incredibly affordable SD card.

"this is how denial of reality looks like."

And this is what an utterly empty reply looks like when someone lacks any arguments.

"your few Sony devices don't prove there were no widespread quality issues. Those were shared and pointed out to you earlier, but you keep pretending not to notice them like a blind Sony fan."

And what am I supposed to do about those and why in god's name should I care? Should nobody ever buy a Samsung again because of Note7's battery? Most of Sony's problems and "problems" are nonsense blown out of proportion by usual haters that have never seen a Sony anyway.
All I know is that all Sony devices I ever had worked way beyond my expectations in regard to quality/reliability and longevity. Also phones.
And I don't like or dislike Sony as a brand at all which you apparently simply cannot understand nor deal with the fact that my Sony devices simply work(ed) flawlessly. Am I supposed to lie about them or what would make you wannabe great forum experts happy?

"modern is the antonym of a Sony smartphone today."

Unsurprisingly, yet another completely empty statement resulting from a lack of arguments wasting everybody's time.

"You have so much time to write so many long comments defending sony. Are you a colleague of PabloDog?"

Unfortunately, apparently many people need or want things spelled out for them. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm a tech fan that doesn't care about the brand. If Sony made a device like vivo x300 pro, I would've considered buying one or recommended it to a friend or relative. I even have Sony WH1000XM3 headphones for over 5 years that I'm quite happy with.
