The a57 is extremely overpriced, the a37's bezel size is unacceptable in 2026.
    A hard pass.
Xiaomi produces infinitely better deal phones.

I was thinking of "upgrading" when the 1 and 5 V arrived, didn't because of the missing notification LED and VI and VII got worse screen resolution and form factor and no more 5 model. If my 1 III were to die, I'd have to choose between the 1 VII and 10 VII since nothing else on the market is really worth any kind of a look.

I'm well aware why most brands want to kill the features I'm praising, they cost money or don't let them earn as much through nonsensical "storage upgrades" and e-waste Bluetooth headphones business. The average consumer either has too little (tech) literacy to understand how much he's losing and/or cares more about having a shiny new thing than about having a good shiny new thing that works in his favor and not for someone else's profits.

Yes I know they have removed features that you have mentioned and I also agree about the OS and apps getting more demanding than it should be (based on reviews and tech articles).

What I meant was that the modern phones did develop and improve (but slowed down the pace in the past years). I have looked at all the brands and yes I have seen many brands have been reusing older hardware components in their newer models and asking for premium prices.

For someone like me it will be an upgrade but I will always do my research first before deciding which phone I will get next.

There should be a "No, not without an SD card which forces me to buy Samsung's overpriced flash memory."
A 1TB sd card is ~130 euro and lasts for a lifetime.

Overall the A57 is a nice device with good softwaresupport, but the price is too high. Fortunately for us the price always drops quite significantly after a few months and that will make it a much better deal.

Anonymous, 29 Mar 2026For that price people can buy previous year flagship Samsung phones or iPhones. But yes ther... moreRespect for using a phone that long! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ˜Ž Unfortunately, quite unlikely that anyone will manufacture new batteries and we never got to standardising them, for obvious reasons. ๐Ÿค‘

But I have to disagree about phones getting better. The one thing that's advancing a bit is processing power, which is simply natural development in any tech, and means much less than it should 'cause it's being wasted on OS and apps getting more demanding for no reason.
It's good for gaming, I guess, but been a while since I personally had any game on my phone.

Displays have gotten better as far as high refresh rates and a bit more (imo largely unnecessary) brightness go, but dpi mostly got cut back and no current phone has 540 dpi of my 2015 BlackBerry Priv, let alone 640 dpi of my Sony Xperia 1 III.
Within the same brand... Samsung Galaxy S6 and S7 had almost 600 dpi, 10 years later Galaxy S26 barely has 400 with obvious pixelisation and screen door effect.

Cameras haven't progressed in the past 5+ years either, all we now get is some AI processing BS.

We lost compact phones completely. Except for Sony Xperia and low-end devices, user-friendly features like the 3,5 mm jack and microSD slot are gone, as are (also except Xperia) normal displays without hideous holes or notches.

Probably insignificant for most, but we also lost any really useful innovation like the Priv's keyboard was and settled on the boring to death one-piece glass slab and a bit of useless and fragile folding nonsense.

Aside from prices getting 2-3 times what they were 10 years ago, very little has progressed on phones and a lot got much worse and my next phone purchase won't be a phone I'd like best, but the one I'll hate the least. Hopefully there's a couple more years in my 1 III 'cause the current market is simply a horror show.
