Didn't even occur to me that I might flash it to my current phone, but I also have to say that the days where I'd do that with my one and only phone are long gone. 😄 Wouldn't exactly be fun if something goes wrong (never did back in the day, but still) or even just the banking app not working or overseeing that I'd lose some data I only have on the phone. Or the system be buggy or unstable for whatever reason on the phone that worked perfectly for 5 years now.
And the only device that would still be functional sitting in some drawer is a BlackBerry Priv whose bootloader can't be unlocked. 🤷♂️ Even got two of those as the wife also had one but doesn't help much. 😄
So I'll leave it for when I switch phones. Perhaps I decide to be adventurous with the wife's new tablet at some point. 😄
In any case, sounds great, will certainly revisit the topic at some point and thanks again for the info! 🍻
User935, 27 Mar 2026Sure, but we've had tiny motors in phones from the first ones with vibration alert around... moreOf course, quality can do wonders, and yes, it’s all about money, but I also think it comes down to use case. The companies experimenting with moving cameras were most likely tracking how often the front camera was used, in addition to knowing how many devices they had sold. That’s probably one of the reason why they scrapped the idea.
Anyway, you said you have a 3.5mm jack and no holes in your screen, that sounds like a Sony to me. If that’s true, Sony supports /e/OS as far as I know, though I’m not sure if all models are supported.
Thank you, /e/OS works well for me. I love the privacy features and the ability to cut off internet access for apps I don’t want connecting, natively. Until now, I was using Rethink DNS for that. While Rethink is a great app and I love it, it does drain the battery a tiny bit more and other resources, nothing extreme, but if i can do internet blocking with less ressources, it's a win for me.
I don’t use any banking apps besides the MFA ones, so take this with a grain of salt. I know some work and some don’t. Most that don’t work are related to the bootloader being unlocked; in their view, the device isn’t secure enough. If you manage to re-lock the bootloader (as far as I know, this is only theoretically possible on Fairphones and is tricky, with the risk of bricking the phone), all apps should work without issues.
MicroG implementation in /e/OS is well done, and I’m actually running paid apps on my Fairphone, like passwords managers and so on. All apps i am using work without issues, and i am using some complex ones like MacroDroid. But yeah, I couldn’t completely escape Google because of the paid apps that need my account in microG to know i paid, but it’s still much better to have MicroG than Google itself on the phone, it gives peace of mind. If you have no paid apps that you need you can stay off grid and still be able to install apps from playstore via /e/ os's own store implementation. Battery life is impressive with the system; it lasts about three days with average use, mostly on Wi-Fi.
The only thing i do not like about the system, is the fact that it does not let you directly uninstall it's basic apps, like phone caller, contacts, calendar, messages and so on. For that you need adb. While the system has no bloatware, i'd like to be able to uninstall any app i whish without the need of adb tools. For basic apps i use mostly the ones from fossify as i find them better.
dynamic island is pure gimmick
Carol-, 26 Mar 2026You are right, not everything tough, as a lot of things broke down back then, mostly because o... moreSure, but we've had tiny motors in phones from the first ones with vibration alert around 2000. It'd take a couple of work hours for an engineer and half a cent per unit, but a well-made pop-up camera mechanism could start opening and closing now and do it perfectly smoothly and constantly till the end of time. 😄 If anyone had interest in doing that, but as said, "drilling a hole" in the screen is simpler and cheaper for the manufacturer; for those who use the selfie cam a lot maybe even beneficial, personally I wouldn't mind not having a selfie cam at all.
Thumbs up for the Fairphone. 👍 I might consider it when the time for a new phone comes, but not sure if I'm willing to give up my 3,5 mm jack and hole-less screen.
Any issues with /e/OS, especially with banking apps and stuff like that? I wouldn't mind getting away from Google a bit more either...
User935, 26 Mar 2026If it wasn't durable, it's the specific implementation at fault, not the idea itself... moreYou are right, not everything tough, as a lot of things broke down back then, mostly because of the moving parts, but the difference was, i could fix them, or anybody else (i think). But we can't quite compare big motors w8th tiny almost micro ones, they are two different beasts.
But i want to ad something to my first comment, as i do not want to be missunderstood. It is not like the moving cameras had cathastrofic failure, they were just glitch8ng, not closing perfectly, not opening perfectly, stuff like that.
As for corporations, i am out of that, bought a fairphone, installed /e/OS, never been happier. Oh well, is not the perfect mawchiene but perfect enough for me, besides the camera that takes way to bright shots in sunny days, but well i hope for a software fix for that.

The audience of this website sometimes
I have both Samsung and Apple flagships in my family, and from daily use of both screens, I’d say Apple’s Dynamic Island feels like a camouflaged pothole. It’s like having a crack on one side of your TV—distracting at first, but something you get used to after a month, until you watch another TV and notice the difference again.
The true quality of a flagship display isn’t really felt during UI navigation or web browsing, but when viewing photos or watching videos—and that’s exactly when the Dynamic Island gets in the way.
Carol-, 25 Mar 2026Neah, was interesting but not durable enough, a lot of those motorized cameras started to make... moreIf it wasn't durable, it's the specific implementation at fault, not the idea itself; we should really stop buying into electronics manufacturers' scaremongering about any movable part. My wife had a Mi 9T Pro, the motorised camera worked just fine. My parents are still using a 20 year old 20 € No-Name DVD player, both the motorised disc tray and playback work as they always did.
60 years ago there were people taking a stroll on the moon, in the decades after we had all sorts of devices with motorised mechanical parts, also portable like the discman and cameras, 20-30 years ago there were phones with sliding, swiveling, folding parts, keyboards and removable batteries plus water-proofing; but come 2025 a camera shutter button on iPhone is amazing innovation and anything that moves is immediately dismissed as impossible to produce.
Ridiculous. Not you personally, of course, but how we've let big corporations convince us that anything but the absolute cheapest (for them) route can't work while we're paying more and more for zero innovation and zero engineering effort.

edit: and the new 1s are missing the 4K screen. They're still the best phones on the market IMO, but I would wish they didn't change things for the worse after Mark IV

Sony Xperia ❤️😄Sony Xperia's design is my favourite. There's really nothing quite like an Xperia right now. It's brilliant.
It includes front-facing stereo speakers and selfie cam at the top in the top and bottom bezels with no punch hole in the display. It's perfect…
Udim, 25 Mar 2026whatever happened to the full screen phones from 5 years ago that had that pop out selfie cam?... moreNeah, was interesting but not durable enough, a lot of those motorized cameras started to make problems after less then 2 years, they had to be ditched. Actually the best wqy to get rid of holes in the screen would be to use the back camera for selfies too. But then there is a need of a second screen, preferably small, on the back. This again, is not something many people would be a fan of. Some people actually use their phones for productivity and not selfies and what/need to do video-calling on the main screen. Another way will be a hinge to manually move the main cam to the side, like opening a book. A very durable unmotorized hinge. But that might still fail because of the necessary connections and will be more expensive. Another way would be under the screen cameras, i do not know how viable is this for apple but i am pretty sure that all this ideas were already scrapped because of different reasons, money comming into play too.
Doesn't matter. Apple is still the BEST! king of smartphone!
NerdBro, 25 Mar 2026ZTE and Redmagic already had an underdisplay tech since 2020. Redmagic's rocking it already lolThey have low standards as its made for Android users that like specs and dont care about quantity.

For a while I though people were taking random selfies throughout the day, but the best move is half getting up from their chair and leaning over the work desk to unlock the phone; always looks as if they're having a stroke or something 😄😄
Other companies (ZTE) managed to put the main selfie camera, with much higher resolution, under display. The structured light system is lower resolution. What's stopping them? Also, they could at least move from structured light to 3D Time of Flight, like the Chinese - that would at least make the entire structure much smaller.
