Simply put, lens construction and tradeoffs have much bigger impact than sensor itself (for daylight at least).

I've only started doing this as a hobby a few years ago buying a new D850 kit (and I wouldn't recommend doing that, way too pricey for starting out), but everything else I have I bought used. 5 of 6 lenses that I have are around and over 30 years old, flashes 15-20 or so, all in mint condition; if they didn't have a different design from the new stuff, you would think they've just been unboxed a couple of days ago. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

But you're probably right, a real camera is probably mostly overkill for posting a simple pic on social media anyway. I don't actually have any social media for a while now, just taking lots of photos to create memories or nice photos for myself, family, friends...

But at the same time, these are overqualified for the odd social media post with their consistent oversharpening and compression from the websites/apps themselves, so there's that.

Much nicer framing of people. There is no 35mm lossless in-sensor zoom for 23/24mm main cameras. And using 2x in sensor zoom means you are only using a quarter of the original sensor area with the same physical properties as the 23mm optics. Native 35mm will give you a lot nicer bokeh for example. For me, 35mm is the main reason to consider this phone

Software trickery can only do so much (IMO all this current AI sharpening and noise reduction harms more than it does good), with a real camera you don't need much of that trickery.
Any 2010-2015 DSLR with any '80-'90s lens would always do a better picture than a current phone and open worlds you don't know exist when shooting with a phone (as I said in a previous post, real bokeh, flash, you name it).

Again, not trying to be negative, just saying you could add a lot to your knowledge and skills set, "explore the art of photography", with a mere 250 โ‚ฌ used camera set. 500 if you wanna go pro and full frame with e.g a 2012 D800. Even just 100 โ‚ฌ can get you started with a D3200 and a lens or two.

notafanboy, 02 Mar 2026Stop being such a killjoy man. Let people enjoy things.Quite the contrary, my intention was to provide an alternative that in my experience provides much more fun and enjoyment without costing more or being significantly more inconvenient.

And I've seen a lot of people thinking that a better camera costs thousands and you need a doctorate in physics to use it so never even consider it.

I'm talking about a ~250 โ‚ฌ (with lens(es), batteries, cards, a bag...) Nikon D300 with whatever 300 mm zoom (450 mm equivalent, since that's kinda the topic here). Or D3500 as beginner-friendlier more modern alternative, and even a D5600 (Wi-Fi might be useful ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ) would fit in the 400 โ‚ฌ these teleconverter kits cost. And open a world of possibilities not doable with a phone, from bokeh for portraiture to flash photography and a million other things.
Or the compact superzoom Coolpix P900 or newer variants if you're into reaching 2000 mm equiv. optically ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Even that at least has a viewfinder which is certainly a huge deal when shooting at long focal lengths.

Since these teleconverters weigh 400 g and I assume you carry it in some sort of a bag, might as well be a bag for a small APS-C DSLR and a few hundred grams more.

That's why I think "budget efficiency plus lightweight totally worth the trade-offs" isn't true, but to each their own. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ If you're satisfied with it, enjoy! Hope you capture a lot of nice ones! ๐Ÿป
