Not a lot has seemingly changed in the display department since last year, at least on paper. The Razr 70 still gets a 6.9-inch, FullHD+, LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Motorola has added a formal Dolby Vision certification, but other than that, the peak brightness is still being advertised as 3,000 nits.
We made sure to test the brightness figures ourselves in our standardized manner, and while nothing major seems to have changed, the panel on the Razr 70 is a bit brighter than that on the Razr 60. We measured around 1,522 nits of maximum brightness, up from around 1,189 last year. This makes the Razr 70 one of the brightest clamshell foldables we've tested.
The cover display holds its own pretty well in terms of brightness too. We measured a maximum figure of around 1,296 nits, which is perfectly comfortable for outdoor use even in bright sunlight.
When showing just a 10% patch of white on the cover screen, the new Razr 70 boosted the cover screen brightness to 1704nits, which is higher than last year's model.
Refresh rate
Motorola revamped its refresh rate menu a bit for this year's Razr 70 models. Now it has three options instead of two. The default "Smart and Balanced" and "Hyper Smooth" can both refresh at up to 120Hz. Since the Razr 70 has LTPO display tech, the refresh rate gets adjusted in a very dynamic manner, with the ability to go all the way down to 1Hz to save energy. The first mode is just a bit more conservative than the latter, but they mostly behave identically. If a fixed 120Hz refresh rate is what you are after, say, for gaming purposes, then you should probably rely on the Gametime overlay inside games instead. It can force high refresh rate apps with quite a bit of success and consistency.
The third "Efficiency first" option basically places a 60Hz refresh rate cap on the phone but doesn't really interfere with any of the adaptive behavior. The phone can still drop down to say 30Hz for video playback or all the way down to 1Hz when nothing is happening on screen.
Streaming and HDR
Motorola effectively addressed the one HDR issue we had with the Razr 60 by getting the Razr 70 Dolby Vision certified. That said, the phone still doesn't report Dolby Vision video decoding capabilities in software, which is kind of odd. It can do HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, though.
On a more positive note, the Razr 70 has the highest possible Google Widevine L1 DRM certification, allowing apps like Netflix to offer up FullHD streams.
The Razr 70 has a slightly larger battery than its predecessor. It is still a modern Si/C cell, but this time it has grown a bit to 4,800 mAh or about a 300 mAh increase. Given that the two phones use essentially the same display and chipset combo, we frankly expected to see very similar battery results - frankly a rather disappointing prospect, given the nine and a half hours of Active Use Score achieved by the Razr 60/Razr 2025.
In a rather pleasant surprise, the Razr 70 actually managed a much, much better Active Use Score of 13 hours. This is actually great for a modern clamshell foldable. So, whatever was holding last year's model endurance-wise has apparently been successfully addressed.
Unfortunately, Motorola did not upgrade the charging support on the Razr 70, and it is again stuck at 30W TurboCharge/TurboPower. You have to step up to the Ultra to get Motorola's 68W charging tech. Since Motorola uses standard USB Power Delivery, you can pretty much buy any good charger to go with your Razr 70.
The phone also has 15W wireless charging support.
Expectedly, the Razr 70 is far from the fastest-charging device out there. Still, it is not the worst among its clamshell foldable peers since those tend to offer slower charging in general. Fifteen minutes on the charger got us from 1% to 35%, thirty minutes resulted in a charge of 63%, and a full charge took 53 minutes.
As for battery protection features, there is a basic implementation that allows you to set a charging cap. You can either do that manually or let the system try to decide when to stop charging at 80% and then continue for a full top-up only an hour before you actually unplug the phone. Of course, this works best if you are on a fairly regular charging schedule.
The Razr 70 has a stereo speaker setup with one main bottom-firing speaker and another front-facing one above the display that also acts as an earpiece. This does, unfortunately, naturally lead to some imbalance in the output, but it's not that severe.
The Razr 70 earned a Very Good loudness rating in our tests with a score almost exactly identical to last year's Razer 60 model. In fact, we think Motorola might be reusing the same speaker setup, which is not a bad thing since it provides clean mids and mostly undistorted highs with a rich sound stage.
Use the Playback controls to listen to the phone sample recordings (best use headphones). We measure the average loudness of the speakers in LUFS. A lower absolute value means a louder sound. A look at the frequency response chart will tell you how far off the ideal "0db" flat line is the reproduction of the bass, treble, and mid frequencies. The Razr 70 doesn't really have all that many fancy audio features to play around with, but you do still get a full Dolby Atmos implementation, including modes and smart mode and a full equalizer.
While last year's Razr 60 existed in a dual Nano-SIM variant in some markets, the Razr 70 is only available with a single Nano-Sim slot. Kind of a weird decision, to be frank, given that even the SIM tray looks like there is ample room for a second SIM that is just being artificially blocked off. That said, you can still get two active lines at the same time by using the eSIM functionality. In terms of network features, the Razr 70 has SA/NSA Sub-6 5G support.
Location services include GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO and QZSS. The Razr 70 does improve a bit from last year's model by adding tri-band support to its Wi-Fi 6e radio. That means you can access the still relatively uncongested 6GHz spectrum. Bluetooth is version 5.4 with LE support. There is no FM radio and no 3.5mm audio jack. There is an onboard NFC.
The Type-C port is backed up by a simple USB 2.0 data connection, which means a theoretical maximum data throughput of 480 Mbps. There is support for USB Host/OTG, but nothing fancier like video output over USB Alt mode.
The Razr 70 has a pretty good set of onboard sensors. There is an st lsm6dso accelerometer and gyroscope combo, a memsic mmc56xx magnetometer and compass combo, and an ams tcs3720 light sensor. In fact, there is another light sensor on the outside near the cover display as well. The Razr 70 has something called a Motorola Ultrasound Proximity. While it seems to mostly work like a dedicated hardware proximity sensor and can even be read by third-party apps, it still behaves a bit oddly, essentially "sticking" in the triggered state even after being uncovered. There is no barometer on board.
