Futurelect is attending the Civil Society Voter and Civic Education Coordination Workshop hosted by Kagiso Trust (KT) in Johannesburg today and tomorrow. Wellington Radu, our Regional Head of Programmes: Southern Africa, is joining civil society partners for conversations on how civic and voter education efforts can be better coordinated ahead of South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections. As an organisation working to strengthen democratic participation through civic education and public leadership development, Futurelect values spaces that bring civil society actors together to share insights, align efforts, and support more informed participation. If representation shapes outcomes, then the question becomes: how do we strengthen the pipeline? The data is clear: women’s participation in public office is not limited by capability, but often by access. ✅ Access to leadership development. ✅ Access to networks and mentorship. ✅ Access to resources required to participate, lead and serve effectively. These are not gaps in ambition but rather gaps in opportunity. Sustained progress in representation requires sustained investment in the systems that support women before, during and beyond public office. At Futurelect, our focus remains on equipping leaders with the tools, networks and support needed to participate effectively in public leadership. We are actively seeking funders and partners who are ready to champion the next generation of leaders shaping the continent. What if the future of African politics depends on reclaiming who gets to lead? In this reflection, Natasha Kimani challenges the idea that politics belongs to the corrupt, the connected, or the powerful. At Futurelect, we believe public leadership can and must be reclaimed by people driven by service, integrity, and the courage to transform society. Through our public leadership programmes, we support emerging leaders who are hungry for change, committed to public service, and ready to step into leadership with purpose. But leadership pipelines do not build themselves. If we want politics shaped by people of integrity, not just people with access, then leadership development must be funded. We are actively seeking funders, institutional partners, and strategic collaborators who believe in strengthening democracy across Africa. Support our mission at www.futurelect.org or contact melody@futurelect.org to explore funding and partnership opportunities. #futurelect #publicleadership #democracy #eastafrica #socialimpact #philanthropy

"The technical requirements may be the same, but the social and economic costs are highly unequal." We asked our East Africa Regional Director, Natasha Kimani, whether women need more credentials than men to be considered qualified for public office. Her answer gets to the real issue. Technically, no. The formal requirements are the same across genders. But evidence and data across the continent tell a different story: women consistently need to demonstrate a higher standing than their male counterparts just to be considered for elected office. Same bar on paper. Higher bar in practice. The gap is in what women are expected to prove, sacrifice, and overcome to be taken seriously as candidates. At Futurelect, closing that gap is central to everything we build. #ElectAWoman #WomenInLeadership #WomenInPublicOffice #Futurelect

“Why does representation matter?” is a question we still hear often in 2026. The impact goes beyond equity. It affects how decisions are made, which priorities are recognised and how public institutions respond to the needs of communities. Research consistently shows that the composition of a leadership body shapes the decisions that follow. When women are underrepresented in public office, governance can suffer from a lack of perspective. Representative leadership strengthens governance by: ✅ Improving Policy Development: Incorporating lived experiences and perspectives that may otherwise be overlooked. ✅ Strengthening Service Delivery: Helping ensure that public resources respond to the realities of the communities they are meant to serve. ✅ Building Public Trust: Supporting more inclusive, responsive and resilient decision-making. Who sits at the decision-making table matters. At Futurelect, we support representative public leadership because it contributes to stronger governance outcomes. #ElectAWoman #WomenInLeadership #WomenInPublicOffice #Futurelect
