Peace in the Great Lakes region requires skilled #peacebuilders at all levels. However, many youth and community-based actors often lack the technical skills needed to effectively facilitate dialogue, mediate disputes, and support #conflictresolution. To strengthen youth-led peace efforts, ACCORD, in partnership with the ICGLR Regional Youth Forum (RYF), is convening an advanced training workshop on mediation techniques and dialogue facilitation from 30 March - 01 April, in #Nairobi. The initiative aims to equip young peace practitioners with practical tools to contribute to sustainable #peace across the region.

Mitigating conflict towards sustainable peace, security and development in Africa
About us
The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) is a South African-based civil society organisation working throughout Africa to bring creative African solutions to the challenges posed by conflict on the continent. ACCORD’s primary aim is to influence political developments by bringing conflict resolution, dialogue and institutional development to the forefront as an alternative to armed violence and protracted conflict. ACCORD specialises in conflict management, conflict analysis and conflict prevention. We intervene in conflicts through mediation, negotiation, training, research and conflict analysis. ACCORD works throughout Africa: from SADC in the south, through the Great Lakes region to the Horn of Africa and in West Africa. Since 1992, ACCORD has trained over 20,000 people in conflict management and conflict resolution skills, focussing on all sectors: government and the public service, business, military and police, and civil society. ACCORD is part of the growing momentum for an African Renaissance. The United Nations has recognised ACCORD’s approach of intervention, research, training and early warning as a viable model for conflict prevention and conflict transformation on the continent.

Is sovereignty being reshaped? Xanthe Gittings writes about the erosion of sovereignty in the current global climate. Following tragedies such as the Rwandan genocide, both Africa and the international community revised their understanding of sovereignty, by developing the Responsibility to Protect which would allow for intervention in the case of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. However, recent developments indicate that the humanitarian justification of violations of sovereignty have disappeared and have been replaced by violations in pursuit of national self-interest. As global dynamics shift, so do the threats to peace. Abraham E. Minko, Ph.D writes about these increasing risk of hybrid threats to peace and security in Africa. These threats include cyber warfare and disinformation campaigns which influence the outcomes of political events. As such, regional bodies and the African Union (AU) need to adapt to these new challenges and ensure that their security frameworks can address the challenges of the changing security landscape. How should Africa navigate shifting global dynamics? John Kayode Fayemi, PhD. who reflects on the current state of relations between the West and Africa during this time of changing global forces. He writes that now is the time for Africa to work together as a bloc and forge new systems and partnerships that are more beneficial to Africa and African growth. This requires the West to look at Africa as an equal partner and not just as place for exploitation and resource extraction. Read More: https://lnkd.in/daiwwgYK
